Zod, you cheeky fecker, I had to do history prelims after eight weeks in order to make it to the second term, but then got to go punting and chase Sloanes for two summers, with crash bang wallop ten papers in five days in the third summer. One essay a week, no lectures.
Wasn't that at the other place? At mine, there are only Easter Term exams and I'm pretty sure the historians didn't see an examination room in the first two years. Odd that it qualified as a Tripos.
Prelims at the end of Michaelmas Term in the first year, then Schools (finals) in Trinity Term of year three. Now prelims have been binned and they do Honour Moderations (Mods) at the end of year one. Prelims were pass/fail. Historiography, source criticism, and languages. Gibbon, Macaulay, and two language based papers (I did French - de Tocqueville, and Latin - Bede).

I had to go to my place because I was too thick to understand the explanation of the Tripos system in your place's Prospectus.
Yes, I gather that is a well-beaten path to the doors of your place. Inauspicious starts and all that.

OTOH, we have TB on our team.

Hmm.

It is a subject that I regret dropping before GCSE, but thanks to the unique structure of the school, it wasn't possible for me to take History at the same time as IT.

But of course, which bits of History should we study? French Revolution? Crimean War? Feudal System?

(off topic, but at a comedy show last week, one of the comedians made excellent use of his History degree as part of his act)
As someone who is good at the maths / science stuff, I got a fair bit of stick when I wanted to keep going with history & languages in my final year at high school.
It was largely thanks to the support of one teacher that I stuck to my guns, dropped physics (too easy) and did C18 history and German instead.
Ok I failed German where I would have breezed through physics, but am glad I didn't get stuck in the straight maths & science stream.

Cliff (the teacher) also introduced me to the concept of Uomo Universale, and encouraged me (and others) to study what we didn't know, rather than stick to what we were already good at.

A beer for the late Clifford J Barley.

Have I missed it or has it not been mentioned about the JFK files. All the CIA and FBI secret files that Trump is saying he's going to release.

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/10/21/politics/trump-j...

I wonder if it will spectacularly backfire on him?
Trump is not releasing the files, Congress decided to release them ages ago. Trump is claiming credit as usual.
The files will be released unless the president overrides it for security reasons, basically he has the final tick on the box.
The Wotsit in chief has of course interpreted this as he is releasing them.

This story is being made into a much bigger deal than it should be because people as per normal are looking for the smallest reasons to criticise Trump. I say this not as a fanboy but simply someone tired of the non stop whining and hunting for reasons to be upset or offended by Trump.
The whole thread has been that.
They still after all this time dont get it.
Spot on. I've just wasted another 4 minutes of my life looking at this thread of neurotics. Plainly some people would benefit from being in front of a shrink ,rather than a keyboard.

Four minutes to look through nearly 120 pages! You must be even cleverer than I thought!

That's twice you've commented on someone being clever today, of course you don't actually mean that, your just being, snide.

The thing I like about Trump, which also happens to be one of the reasons he was made POTUS, is that he infuriates the liberal left.

So entertaining to see them frothing at the mouth on a daily basis. They are obsessed with him!

Is that the normal criteria you use to gauge a person - how good he is at upsetting people?

How do you think that might reflect on you?

Certainly this is true for some, in much the same way that an intelligent, articulate, liberal, black man, and indeed white woman, wound up the populist Right into a complete frenzy.

Away from the extremes of solely reacting to immediate stimuli, more thoughtful minds are wondering if having such an incompetent, corrupt, and potentially globally dangerous person in charge of the 'free' world is such a great idea.

This is quote from an article about Flake's speech to Congress yeterday. The general type it refers to are easily recognisable, including hereabouts:

said:
It was a speech that the burn-it-down crowd will ignore, focusing solely on the short-term outcome, believing that their movement to purify the party in Trump’s image is coming into its own. They’re happy with the fallen American standard of leadership: early morning golden-toilet rage-tweeting, political beefing, phony wall-building, and the table scraps of regulatory rollbacks. Oh, and “but Gorsuch!”

Meanwhile the Donald just can't let it rest, bringing it up again on an interview on Good morning America

"I was really nice to her. I respect her, I respect her family, I certainly respect La David, who I, by the way, called La David right from the beginning, They put a chart in front, La David, it says La David Johnson."
"I was extremely nice to her," Trump said. "Nobody has more respect than I do. Nobody."

Amazing how it he can turn it around to all be about him again.
