i don't like what this stands for, it has nothing to do with anything specific that may or may not happen, Orwellian society is one step closer

no amount of rolling eye, smilies or FFSs is going to change that

I apologise I should never have replied again to this thread, my views on this subject are put down in the earlier pages of this thread, they have not changed

Yes, you have said that you don't like it and that you don't like what it stands for; you haven't said what that is.

But it's not surveillance. It's a snapshot of one instant in time. If streetview was live streaming video I could see your point and I would also be worried.
Maybe, but, if a fun car is spotted in your drive three years ago, chances are there is an even nicer fun car parked there now...

Joyriders are go....

Interesting assumption. Where have you been the last year or so?

What's to say the car belongs to the owner of that house?

Or it's not just someone visiting?

Or it's not been swapped for something more practical?

Or that the owner hasn't fallen on hard times and sold it?

Or that the owner even still lives there?

Or that the car will even be there on the offchance they decide to turn up to steal it?

It seems a lot of trouble to go to for someone elsewhere in the country planning to steal a car based on a single image they've seen on StreetView.

"That's a nice car, I think I'll have that... even though it's 200 miles away and I have no idea if they still own it or if it'll even be there when i get there, still why not.... or I could just drive around one of the more affluent local areas and see what I can find."

You can think that all you like, but tough - if I want to take photos of your house from the street and post them on the internet, I'm entitled to do that. And so is google. It amazes me that they pander to people who object.
And I'm entitled not to like it.
Be my guest - you can piss and moan all you like about it, it's not going to go away wink
One could say the same about speed cameras...

It's poor manners to exercise entitlement without respecting the desire for privacy...

The desire for privacy does equate to the right to privacy. There is no right to privacy in a public place. Would you honestly prefer to live in a world where it is illegal to take photographs in public? Where do you draw the line? Once you start down that road, and we probably already have, there is no turning back.

The street outside your house is a public place. Your house is private property. It is not illegal to photograph private property from a public place.

I wonder if there has yet been an instance where Google Streetview has been used in the pursuit of crime? I don't recall seeing anything.

No, but the street from where it can be seen is. Stop dodging and answer the question.

The photo of my house appears to have been taken when we had some sun last year. Any joyrider who turns up now looking for the shiny kit car outside is going to be disappointed that he didn't wait another few weeks.

And you're all up in arms here everytime any kind of road monitoring, or car black boxes are mentioned. It all seems part of the same idea to me.

Street view has been around in many other countries for years.

'kinnel, how the hell do you make THAT connection?

One is a series of photographic stills glued into a panorama; the other is real-time tracking of individuals. Not quite the same thing at all there.
