Definition of fascism : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

Last Week Tonight was brilliant, Oliver dissects the three main weapons of how Trump tries to deal with problems.

I didn't know that 'whataboutism' was a Soviet propaganda tactic. It's perversely used quite a lot here.

Julian Assange asked to be Australia’s ambassador to the United States.
they were in communication (although a very brief one) but I wouldn't call that "working together", since Donald Jr. didn't really listen to the advice (maybe it was smart from him I dunno)

Exposing dirt of your opponent is legit strategy so I can't see the problem here especially because WL has never published fake files.

Farage tried the same thing.

I get the impression that there is a fight going on for the soul of the Republican Party - a fight between traditional honest and decent individuals and an alternative strand that possesses a dark heart with little regard for human dignity and is nihilistic in nature.

There is certainly a fight - one between the moderate wing represented by Bush snr and Bush jnr, and Rep senators like Flake on the one had, and the Tea Party/evangelical Christians/hard conservatives on the other. For many years now the Republican Party has been a broad church pulling together a wide number of disparate interests under a single banner. The trick had been to get them all to rub along together on a broadly consensual basis.

Bannon decided that that wasn't good enough, and that the Tea Party wing had enough potential clout to stage a takeover. Had Trump - who is really not much of Republican of any shade - not won the nomination it is arguable that the Tea Party wing would have gone into the wilderness for a while. As it is, it is the moderate consensual part of the party that now finds itself under attack and retreating.

Can we talk Tax plans? The ROP/Donald still want to push this trickle down tax plan, giving huge tax cuts to the rich and companies assuming that the benefits would filter down to those below, with higher wages and more jobs.

But this has never happened before. Reagan tried it, as did Bush senior. All that happened was that the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. Companies paid out the extra money to shareholders and bonuses to senior management.

It'll reduce tax revenues by $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years, the legal maximum they can do this. At the moment the deficit is growing significantly. So they are going to run up debt to give huge tax breaks to the wealthy. When the debt runs up, that will lead to budget cuts which is more likely to affect the poor and middle class, further increasing the inequality. The only reason to do this is to reward your wealthy donors...

Of course, the donald weighed in, suggesting using the tax reform to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, using the savings from 15 million Americans going uninsured to cut income taxes on the wealthy

They are using averages to disguise the gains
Sarah Saunders "The average american family would get a $4000 raise under the presidents tax cut plans. So how could any member of congress be against this?"
Well, as Franklin Leonard said: "If I give 10 apples to one person and none to 9, the average person has 1 apple. Why are 9 people mad?"
Just brilliant. Governances by an evil Monty Python.

Made me go and lok at who looked the best GoP candidate last year.

Go Kaisch. biggrin

Also made me think of the woman who beat the self titled' biggest homophobe in the state' this week.

I saw this on Last Week Tonight, when the new Delegate said she would not insult any of her constituents, referring directly to the person she was replacing. biggrin

Mental? Yes. It takes a mental personality to basically lose his RL for what he perceives to be higher cause.

But enough people seem to be falling for it. Which begs the question; Is Trump incredibly persuasive? Or are his supporters incredibly thick?

Or maybe both.....

Incredibly angry and fed up and incredibly being lied too by evil forces that recognise vulnerable victims. I will not go down the "they are thick" route. They are being desperately lied to.

And these folks would be both the Republicans and the Democrats, and virtually every other person in politics.

No - I do not paint all politicians with the same brush. There are good and bad people inside politics and outside politics. What is interesting is that the struggle between these two sides is most obvious and most extreme in the Republicans at the moment.

Nobody is perfect, but not everybody is evil.

"Well they're all the same" is a generalisation usually made by those whose own 'side' have just done something particularly bad / stupid.

Did anyone see round 2 of Jeff Sessions extraordinary testimony yesterday.

He didn't remember anything that might be incriminating, such as meetings with Papadopolus, but definitely remembers telling him not to get involved with russia.

He "had no recollection" of the meetings until he saw recent news reports. I do now recall the March 2016 meeting at the Trump Hotel that Mr. Papadopoulos attended, but I have no clear recollection of the details of what he said at that meeting," Sessions said. "After reading his account, and to the best of my recollection, I believe that I wanted to make clear to him that he was not authorized to represent the campaign with the Russian government or any other foreign government, for that matter."

He also claimed it was a lie that he had ever lied, but is constantly using the phrase "to the best of my recollection". But he forgot about meetings with russian, forgot about pushing back against meetings with russians, until it was all laid out before him in the press, when in fact he did suddenly remember all about them and managed to remember that he was very against them.

Hum....
