Paris shooting and casualties ?
Discussion
Having never done more than shot a few rabbits I wouldn't have a clue. I'm just thinking of the sheer impossibility of having an armed police presence in all places at all times, and the fact that there is a ready army there if a few capable citizens were armed. Wondering aloud if with a bit of training you could make society more resistant to these sort of attacks.
Looking at the Charlie Hebdo attack videos it was pretty obvious who the terrorists were and if the phone it was filmed on had been a rifle they could have taken him down.

Why not? Does it take years of military training to shoot someone?
Genuine question, I've never done it. But the video on http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/charlie-hebdo-terror-attack-sickening-4935314]here and a few others look like they would be a fairly easy shot.

how do these civilians tell armed plain clothes cops from bad guys? (or even baddies wearing bulletproof vests and black combat gear from cops wearing the same - just trust in the word 'Police' across the front?)
cops can radio each other to avoid shooting at each other
and how do the cops tell the bad guys from the responsible armed populace?
sounds like a recipe for a free-for-all shootout
And what about darker skinned citizens who might be part of the public? Perhaps themselves armed in this gun utopia...doesn't bear thinking about.cops can radio each other to avoid shooting at each other

No, shooting someone is easy. It takes years of training to know when and who to shoot or not. Genuine question, I've never done it. The idea of every Miss Miggins with a rifle under the bed that they can whip out and have at it out the bedroom window whenever they see something that they think looks dodgy going outside is frankly terrifying. Those who think that the public carrying weapons would help in any way have either been playing too much Call of Duty, watching too many movies or have a very limited understanding of statistics.

Can I hear gunfire? CheckCan I see a gunman? Check
Is he shooting random unarmed people/ police officers? Check
Probably a wrong un.
Do I want them to return fire on me with their AK47's?
Is he dressed as a police officer (i.e Anders bloke in Norway)? Yes = must be a good guy.
Hmm....
How can people be this delusional? Loads of people are scared to get hit in a paintball match because it fking hurts. How many would risk getting shot with a high calibre assault rifle?
I wasn't talking about Mrs Miggins blazing away at anything suspicious.
I'd envisage something more like a citizens militia where people who have undergone some vetting and training keep a weapon at home which they can use in certain circumstances.
That way you have a broader base of people who are able and equipped to respond to an emergency.

You wouldn't by any chance be putting together some sort of uniform for yourself right now? You know, one that features a lot of gold braid?I'd envisage something more like a citizens militia where people who have undergone some vetting and training keep a weapon at home which they can use in certain circumstances.

So... how do you see this panning out.I'd envisage something more like a citizens militia where people who have undergone some vetting and training keep a weapon at home which they can use in certain circumstances.

1/ Brothers Mohammed, Alee, Sabir and Maajid all with full flowing beards want to join your citizens militia. Would you give them guns?
2/ There is gunfire in the local Starbucks. Armed police are 1 hour away. Do you phone cousin Cleetus to sneak in the back door and take the terrorists out?
3/ There is gunfire in the shopping centre! Cousin Cleetus turns around and sees 4 arabs with guns running towards a crowd. He takes his firearm and shoots. But he kills militia recruits Mohammed, Alee, Sabir and Maajid
It is a daft idea.
The only way it could be made dafter is if the citizens militia have to shout "Allah akbar!" when drawing their weapons.
All this talk about gun ownership is a rabbit hole we do not want to go down. Yes in this incidents maybe just maybe a civilian with training could use a gun and take out a terrorist but those are massive what if's.
Gun ownership will open a can of worms we want to keep a lid on. Just look at the US in terms of this model and what we do not want. There has been tons of threads on here about gun ownership in the US and the incidents that could have easily been avoided if there where tighter gun controls and that the majority of joe public cannot be trusted with a gun, and then all of a sudden we are on here advocating that if Paris civilians where armed and carrying guns none of these attacks would have happened?????? JESUS.
People stating that we should look at arming the public need to have a long hard look at themselves.
