I wish her luck finding a training contract...

Bear in mind that in order to find a training contract one generally needs a 1st from Oxbridge or a daddy on the board.
The board of what?

Would I be wrong to suggest that you have no idea what you're talking about?

I can't believe the hyperbole on this thread.

Are you honestly saying that anyone studying law at anywhere other than an Oxbrige college is wasting their time and will ammount to nothing?

Really?
I can't see anyone anywhere in this thread saying that?.
I think the repetition throughout the thread of people saying she has "ruined her life" are close enough.

It was a joke letter by a girl who is 17/18. Stop being such miserable sods. I very much doubt this has "ruined her career"; there are plenty of perfectly good universities other than Oxbridge who send their alumni to the Magic Circle.
I don't care what Uni she sent the letter too it's hardly a mature thing to do and now that it's in the media it'll follow her forever, whether that affects her career or not who knows (and who cares) but it'll come up straight away should somebody search her name.

This is the exact point the thread was made on.

Jumping before she's pushed. There's only one person - or institution - looking foolish after that, I wonder who that is?

Love to know how they can interview ten thousand applicants effectively.

Says a lot about the process

Before employing anyone the vast majority of employers/recruiters do a basic Google search for a start. There's no way I'd employ her.

You really think each college can't interview 300 people a year?

It makes me very, very glad the internet wasn't invented when I was her age.

I saw the story. At first, I thought it was a novel harmless idea to raise a bit of a chuckle. I mean if a stand up comedian had done a well-written (her's wasn't) joke about rejecting a place at oxford in a similarly official manner, you might get a laugh for turning the tables linguistically.

Her issues were:
  • She did it in real life
  • That hat
  • It's badly written
  • It's not funny
  • She has a massive chip on her shoulder
  • It makes her look immature
  • That hat

The observation that you would just know she was wearing one of those hats, before even seeing the picture, was bang on the money.

I am sure she is a charming, educated and employable young person. But this was a stupid thing to do. Sadly, however, I am not sure she yet has the self awareness or insight to realise just how silly her behaviour was.

And now it is on the internet.

For ever.

With that hat.

I am absolutely sure she isn't. She's thick and chippy, and has that stupid hat/carpet combo.

In the grand scheme of things, trying to be witty and clever (albeit failing) is not the worst thing a teenager can do – it’s not exactly on par with knicking a 50inch plasma tv from Currys or mugging an old lady in the street.

Indeed, 10 out of 10 to Sparky for getting all huffy and indignant but alas only 1 out of 10 for comprehension. Must try harder.

I like the fact she admonished the uni for holding interviews in large intimidating rooms but intends to study law. . . . . .

I think this also says a lot about the University. I'm sure they have had others- from some "f you" type reposts to some begging letters "you dont know what my parents will do to me if...." to some gutsy responses.

The fact that they choose to make this known to the press tells me a lot about them- that they agree with her feelings about stuffy and elitist, and have sort of said "how dare someone- anyone- tuen us down and be lighthearted about it. We'll show her...

Is this an example of how dumb people have become?

She was offered a place to study Law at Magdalen College, Oxford. She sent them a joke rejection letter as a spoof of the type most applicants will have got.

She now 'hopes' to get a place at UCL!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-1...

Personally I hope she gets rejected and ends up at a polytechnic due to her own stupidity.
At least she's not so stupid as to think Polytechnics still exist.

I'm not sure the university reported it to the press. It was reported in the local paper in Somerset first....There are plenty of other ways this could have got out
