The bit of of the article that got me was when they said the officials searched their suitcases to look for spades and shovels.

Now I've never dug up a body before, in the US or anywhere else, but if I was going to go body snatching in Los Angeles, I'd probably buy a shovel there.
I would be very suprised if any immigration official told them they were searching their bags for "spades and shovels" since they would clearly stick out a mile on x-ray. Much more likely is that a journo has asked "what do you think they were searching your bags for" and these mouthbreathers have said "spades 'n' st innit? wheres my compo?"

But to say it takes 5 minutes to get through US Immigration is a bit of an underestimation.

Shortest time from joining the queue to staning infront of an IO is usually at least an hour. During that time you will also see 30 gates for US passport Holders used by 100 people and 2,000 trying to get through the 4 gates for non US Passport holders. Added to that you will usually have spent at least 5 hours on the 'plane and are not likely to be in the sharpest frame of mind.
Flew coach class to Boston the other week (i.e. I wasn't first off the plane). Took me 10 mins to clear immigration at 6pm.
Coming back to the UK, took 40 mins...

That was a result.

Likely my problem is that I've only flown to 'popular' places like Miami, San Fran, JFK, and LAX.

Yup, I was surprised as well.

Well worth a trip if you ever get a chance - really nice city and people.

I don't know what's more depressing, the hysterical over reaction by US immigration or the fact these airheads are posting things like that on a public timeline under their real names. Never mind immigration, you're also going to have current or future employers looking for that sort of stuff.
Welcome to the 21st century...

People live their lives on-line nowadays, there's no escaping it. Unborn babies have facebook pages (this is actually quite common before any bandwagons get jumped on), if nothing else their photos from a very early age are all over the web.

Also, the biggest growing demographic on Facebook/Twitter is over 50s (last time I looked at some analysis, mid-2011).

Some people aren't smart enough to understand the consequences of this but it's not going away. Some companies now have done away with looking at CVs and just sift through various bits of info on the net. Some companies won't take you on without an on-line profile (how do they know if they can trust you?!) and the most foresighted companies are actually encouraging their employees to use social media, so I think your views are a bit outdated.

Like anything, it can have a positive or negative effect depending on how you use it.

A good friend lived there for a year or so and says he'd go back like a shot without family ties here. Might give it a go but really want to do Highway 1 again but this time with the fiancee and an open top car.

Starting to set the seeds of a plan to drive halfway across as well as the old boy wants to do half the country with each of his boys before he checks out.

It's the same for foreigners coming into the UK.

Exactly. Correct headline should be: Morons are treated as if they are morons.

Thick people get what they deserve.

If the US immigration policy keeps thick sts and tts who think they are owed respect out then good for them.

It wasn't the last time I came through immigration at Heathrow. They had two desks for UK and EU citizens (staffed by trainees) and six or seven for non-UK/EU passport holders.

As for US immigration I've never had a problem. One of the best was when I flew into Philly a couple of years ago. I ended up going to a desk where a new IO was being shown the ropes - he had a quick look at my passport and let me through. The whole process took a couple of minutes max.

Give me US passport control over UK any day.

Guess you don't work in a social industry...

If you work in an org where an on-line presence is essential, you can't get a job if you don't have one.

I wouldn't imagine that there are many companies that won't employ you if you don't have one, I can see why it might be required in some jobs/industries though.

I wouldn't want a job with a company whose recruitment policy was so idiotic that an online profile was essential for acceptance. But that wasn't my question. You said that the company wouldn't know if they can trust you unless you had an online profile. How does that work?

Didn't you know? Everything you read on the Internet is true, even the stuff that contradicts the other stuff!

Just look at what they've been posting/tweeting.

A lot of people are stupid, like these two, about what they say online. Derogatory comments about employers/colleagues crop up a lot.
