I'd go along with that. The Chinese students who live around the area I live in tend to put their adverts up bilingually or just in Chinese. Personally I think that it's fair enough that they might want to share with another Chinese student and not waste the time of other people responding to the advert.
Indeed and it saves them having to explain to a new english flatmate why they keep their passports under the floorboards, why they smell of chow mein when returning from lectures at college and why you must never open the door to immigration officers! biggrin

Just to clarify:

I have issues with any group advertising a property as being for a particular group.

I have issues with a company refusing to serve a particular group.

I don't have issues with private households stating who they wish to enter into a houseshare arrangement with, provide they are not abusive in how they say it.
I have issues with it too, but I think that any company or individual outside the public sector should be allowed to display their bigotry.

I can see the problem of sharing your house with someone from a different culture, so I don't see why this is such a big story. What should happen now is that the government accept that some people want to live with people who are culturally similar, and decriminalise it.

You both have sensible and valid points. This is just crazy.

I'm sure if I advertised a room for a white, heterosexual, christian female then all hell would break loose.

This is nothing new. Some 30 years ago it was all over the news that some guy had his house for sale 'To a white family only' and the law rolled slowly over and he was forced to remove the sign. I think it was in Birmingham.

Anyone remeber that famous peice of film of racist 1950's Britain ? Black guy is looking for accomodation and gets turned away at a B&B by the white landlord who says his white residents wouldn't like it and leave ? Full circle ?

This is about rooms for rent in shared houses, a bit different from a house for sale.

I know of 2 couples who will only sell to non-asians now due to previous experience of attempted gazundering at the last minute. (obviously they do not advertise the fact).

It's a flat house though. So they should have said "low-profile asians" only.

Maybe the householders do it because they know only their particularly selected demographic would agreed to being the twenty-third sharer of a room big enough for two.

I guess racism is different depending on whether you're renting or selling then?

If any of you on here don't fit the racial profile specified in the ads but have a burning desire or need to share a house with the advertisers, then go ahead. The full force of the law will be behind you.

Seriously though, it is poor form, shows lack of tact and knowledge of the law. However, it probably saves a lot of time and misunderstandings.

I shared a house with veggies once ,they threw all my bacon and sausages in the bin everytime,
They complained to the land lord that I was cooking meat in the kitchen, and becauce there where 6 of them
he asked me to leave and find accomadation elsewhere.
Nowadays I could have him for that.

Not about housing but equally(to me) quite shocking.
Wife's friend is trying to raise awareness & funds for a rather nasty eye disease that eventually leads total blindness & pain.
She has been using a coffee house in Clifton over the past year she asked the owners if they would like to be involved or sponsor the charity in any way?
There reply threw her , They said " They only support charities that benefit France or French people" ...???

I was pretty shocked when I heard this.

Sorry OP if off topic.

I don't see what's wrong with that. Plenty of British people only give to UK orientated charities. Admittedly it's a bit odd to hold those views while living in the UK, but I presume they are here to make money, not to become anglicised.

Agree. It's quite unneccesary as well. I'm assuming of course that they aren't actually bigots but want someone who fits in with them - in which case they should just describe themselves and their hobbies and what they like to eat. For the same reason i would't want to share with "Three friendly Australian males and one Saffer in houseshare. SW4." {Btw this was meant to be humourous Mr/Mrs Moderator}

The tt who did that to us was as white as the driven snow. Better policy - never sell your house to a buy-to-let landlord.
