I always think it would be more fun if religions worked like businesses. The Catholic Church is the biggest so they would headhunt the Archbishop of Canterbury or the boss of some other, smaller religion. He could then bring in some efficiency savings, maybe do a hostile takeover or two.

As the Pope is God's representative on Earth, it seems a bit mean of God to give him ill health.

Do you think he woke up to find a horse's head in his lasagna?

You know, god really should have scrolled forward at least a few years before approving this guy for the 'most important job on earth' role.

Poor show by HR if you ask me.
Nope, just about right. Just enough time to get someone who can run the show for another 20-25 years lined up, checked out fully for leanings and history and trained up. They'll even have a month or so to get wound up for the Easter Gig.

Well the Prophecy Of The Popes at least, especially if the next pope is called Peter.

You Mean Sir Jimmy Saville OBE & KCSG (The Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great).
Just a co-incidence him and the Pope were mates.

Dirty secret in the cupboard?
Or he could have a serious illness which will preclude him from doing his Popely duties, whatever they are...
Possibly, although they generally carry on until they get their AAA ticket to the next gig.

Only the 2nd pope to resign?
It depends how serious it is, surely? While they may continue with something like cancer, emaciated but able to continue doing Pope stuff, if he has been diagnosed with something such as Dementia or Alzheimers then that would be another situation altogether. Can't have the Pope regressing to a childlike state and proclaiming that Jelly and Ice Cream will replace Bread and Wine in communion...
