Why are Labour and the Conservatives neck and neck?

I agree that it's payback time. However, I do not agree that a thriving economy is linked to low taxes. Personal taxes anyway.
We've had the basic rate come down from 25% to 20% over the last 15 years or so. The sad fact is that 25% might be the fair rate to achieve the quality of services desired by the nation. However, it now seems like political suicide to even mention increasing the basic rate of tax.
If you are even remotely thinking about voting for the Labour Party, you are either irresponsible, stupid , or both. Its as easy as that. As for the nonsense you have posted here, since when have you heard anyone say they go to work to pay tax? You think 25% is "fair" you pay it, nobody stopping you. Off you go.

Simply?
1. Cameron and the others do not have enough charisma to lure traditional anti-Tory voters like Blair (no matter what you think of his tenure) could do in '97 for anti-Labour voters.
2. The section of society who do not work and claim benefits are worse off and blame the Tories, thinking they are looking after the rich and taking from the poor.
3. Some people would vote Labour no matter what their policies were.
4. More of the Tory vote has gone to the likes of UKIP than Labour's vote.
All IMO

5. A lot of Labour voters still have a chip on their shoulder about Thatcher and blame her for what happened to them/their parents/their grandparents.

Sad but probably true. The idea of Blair getting in because he was fresh-faced is wrong, I think. I changed from voting tory to labour in 97. I liked Major and thought him an excellent PM. In fact, since then, I reckon I underrated him. However, the silly right backbenchers destroyed any chance of Major being able to control the party.
The trend of comments afterwards was that this was the reason people opted for labour: the tories were a shambles and people feared for the economy.
Denigrating the electorate is not really on I think. You will always get those who will vote for one party or another for all their lives, not willing to change despite their performance. Rather a weird point of view. I have supported McLaren for years, through thick and thin, but politics is too important for loyalty.
The floating voter is the one that the parties need to go after, and the tories are focusing on their loyal base, with tax concessions and such.
The attack on the police has caused a few old faithful to be wary, at least that's my experience. People are worried, at least that is my experience, but then I suppose the fact I used to be a police office might make people talk more.
Labour? I haven't any real idea of what they are after. I've not followed them, but one assumes that whatever they are doing must be quite good given the polling results.
I still think that the UKIP vote will not materialise, at least not to the extent reported. So perhaps not that close.

I think the UKIP vote may surprise you.I find when people talk with friends they are happy to talk about voting UKIP but that may not be the case when asked in a poll I think they would declare themselves as a dont know.I actually think and maybe hope that these polls are way off remember John Major.
I think I am probably clutching at Straws but seeing Miliband as Sturgeon's puppet is a frightening thought

Why not? We get the government we deserve. When the electorate can't be arsed spending 10 minutes educating themselves about such trivial economics as the difference between the debt and the deficit we end up with the moron MP's we do. (Just watch 1 minute of the video I linked above!) I wince when I hear the cr*p Cameron is promising in a pathetic bid to out spend Miliband with your childrens future but the depressing fact is he can't win if he doesn't. The electorate need a massive kick in the arse.I have no political bias from parents/friends etc and I'm voting for the conservatives. Results speak for themselves and as the OP has stated they're doing pretty well.
I don't like a few things that they have done (privatising the Royal Mail) but I'm sure any other party would have also done things that I wasn't too keen on.

I agree about the electorate but wouldn't it be great if we had a choice of dynamic charasmatic leaders rather than the limp wristed pathetic excuse for men we have now. Sturgeon had more balls on show than Cameron and Miliband.Whatever happend to conviction politicians.

They should be now after 2008 but instead they managed to pin it entirely on 'bankers'. Innit. The Tories missed the big picture though and played along, they probably welcomed any distraction from the expenses scandal at the time. Oh look over there. Bankers are even nastier than us!
Anyway can hardly blame the electorate for not understanding macro-economics, not when MP's, of all colours, are utterly, utterly clueless fvckwits;
