Northern Ireland

I predict a low turnout because I reckon just about everyone is fed up with dishonest MLAs. Cynicism is rife.
I also get the feeling that people will vote in greater numbers than usual for the #2 parties, veering away from the DUP and SF. Could be a messy mishmash result, with no viable possibilities for leadership. Back to Westminster we go.

Don't underestimate the problems in N Ireland. If it goes back to direct rule history could repeat again.Get writ of the old guard regarding politics over there. You need young people with no luggage for hatred to start fresh.
Ex IRA or the Protestant movement won't work.
Try telling that to the voters. They are entrenched in tradition. It's passed down from generation to generation. The last time there was unexpected change (Alliance party winning East Belfast) it all ended in tears. It would be nice to think that another generation in 20/30 years time would think differently, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Everybody knows what's needed - nobody has the cohones to do it.Ex IRA or the Protestant movement won't work.

It is Ireland the North bit was added on.The people are Irish a different culture than ours.Blame Prince William for all the upheaval the fight between Catholics and Protestant goes back a long way.
It will become one country again one day it would be better for all the Irish.
That's breathtakingly ignorant and simplistic. If the people genuinely were all Irish and all had the same culture do you really think many of the issues would still exist? It's because there are 2 very distinct (and equally valid) traditions and cultures that there is disagreement on how people want to live and where their allegiances are. It will become one country again one day it would be better for all the Irish.

Turnout is expected to be up since the last election.I also get the feeling that people will vote in greater numbers than usual for the #2 parties, veering away from the DUP and SF. Could be a messy mishmash result, with no viable possibilities for leadership. Back to Westminster we go.
I expect that Sinn Fein may increase their vote slightly while the DUP wont lose as much ground as expected.

Some comedian was on radio 4 the other day talking about politics.
From memory his assertion was that people are uniting in a kind of hatred toward Corupt and useless politicians.
They no longer tell jokes about the 'other side' they take the piss out of things like the heating scheme.

The story of the election seems to be a huge rise in votes for Sinn Fein, a small but none the less surprising rise for the RHI inspired DUP and what can only be the end for the SDLP and the UUP.
In other election related news Naomi Long appears to have eaten a cake for every vote she received.

Seems it was the opposite. The turn out was high in comparison to the last election. Maybe there is a wind of change blowing through the province.
Whatever the outcome, how much does the rest of the UK pay out in terms of subsidy to NI? How much has been squandered since the Republic gained independence? As mentioned by others, many of us, particularly from SE England, don't have a clue about Ireland, & frankly don't really care any more. Just seems like endless squabbling, wasting resources, killing, election after election, constitutional crises, religious bullst, & negativity. And for what?? I wager the majority in Great Britain would be only too happy to see NI separating from the UK, & if its a 'United Ireland' or some other type of independent state, who cares?Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
