The majority of journalists can't see it as they all studied english at uni and maths/science is a scary dark place they must never question. They are good at emotional black mail and headlines though.
This, absolutely this. That's the exact view held by me and an increasing number of my friends / colleagues who have more than a basic grasp of numbers. The BBC is particularly lacking in analytical minds as their preferred recruitment is from English & the Arts for journalist / front of camera roles. I've given up shouting at breakfast TV presenters who can't ask secondary questions and just swallow whatever stat the government issues. How about thinking about what they aren't telling us or ask, 'and how does that compare to ......... / what is that as a percentage of GDP / total population etc.Edited by ben5575 on Sunday 27th September 11:19

It wasn't really intended to be a political comment but the entire policy response is political. It's lots of people jostling for position to push their own agenda. I was pointing out the irony that many on the far left see lockdown as a means of destroying capitalism but instead they have fostered the conditions that will bring about more of the same - and in a way that was avoided in the last recession. It's hard not to see the dark humour in that.
Only large dollops of political and economic pain will force a change of policy here. I suspect that will start on the 1st of November. It's the fact that no one seems to see it coming that is so shocking. The popular press will have a field day with this..... It will be the economic equivalent of filming a hospital ward Bergamo in April. Will be interesting to see the whole we are in it together spirit at that juncture. I think we are about to live in "interesting times".

True but in the same way you could point to the massive money injection and such has resulted in the right wing paradise of grabbing even more assets from the less well off and economic meltdown would hugely benefit the very wealthy who have been by and large very insulated from the economic damage so have a vested interest in pushing the govt to continue it's current path. One could not unreasonably promote the idea that it's all due to the evil right wing interests the govt has very much been consorting with rather than evil left wing scientists being bent on introducing marxism after all. I guess my point is that it's convenient to point to 'the other side' being to blame when it's just bloody incompetence from the govt starting from the blond buffoon all the way through cabinet rather than looking through a political lens to blame anyone else.

Is the covid curfew doing more HARM than good? Social distancing goes out the window as London streets and stations are mobbed by revellers after pubs and restaurants all shut at 10pm - and Uber prices surge
There were queues to get into the most popular night time bars here in Birmingham at 2pm yesterday. Is the covid curfew doing more HARM than good? I always find it weird seeing groups of girls dressed up for a night out at lunchtime.

Yep, so all that means is the potential for HMG to lock us all down harder and start closing businesses again.
But still, at least the kids had a good time, and can then blame it all on the older generation for years to come.

Common sight now throughout all city centres on a Saturday I shouldn't wonder. In fact, I have preferred going out through the day for quite some time, but that just could be because I'm getting old I always find it weird seeing groups of girls dressed up for a night out at lunchtime.

It's ironic that it is largely driven by left wing academics and scientists who have proposed and driven the lockdown strategy..
Most academics and probably scientists (being academics) are left wing though. The govt chooses which science it wants to believe - there is sufficient numbers of scientists proposing other solutions that they could use if they wanted. Sweden is hardly the bastion of right wing politics after all and has been the darling of the socialists for decades and yet they have been pretty much the only ones to behave rationally this whole mess. I don't think looking at this through a political lens is actually helpful personally. P.S rather depressingly Mark Woolhouse on Andrew Marr seems to have confirmed that the govt preferred view is 6 more months of suppression and presumably they think our magic bullet vaccine will save us them and also that the govt also simply chose or did not want to consider anything other than disease control epidemiology before the first lockdown. One can but hope that when a member of spi-m states publicly all lockdown does is defer the problem perhaps some of the utter fools in govt are finally taking notice....

Seriously?
BTW Early closing was copied from Belgium, who had a spike and then got their numbers back down. 2 things
Their curfew was "drink up at 11.30" (last orders afaik) rather than kick everyone out at 11.30.
Everyone will have a spike and then see numbers come down naturally. You can only (with 4 documented exceptions) catch it once *
- for a period of time, maybe 12 months

To be clear, its the pub goers fault for doing what they are told and leaving at 10pm?

I certainly wasn't blaming the punters, I hope I wasn't giving that impression. It was just really bloody obvious it was going to happen, especially to those of us old enough to remember what things used to be like back in the days when they kicked people out at 11, only this time it's worse as there's nowhere else for people to go (like nightclubs).Seriously?

Even before I clicked that I wondered "will this be Dolores Cahill, notorious anti-vaxxer and chairperson of a dodgy right-wing Irish fringe party?"This is a fairly long video posted up back in May. I can't help thinking that its on point.

I wouldn't trust Labour at the moment personally. They've offered no oppostion at all to the measures, and look as weak and ineffective as the current shower. Politics needs a real shake-up. Time for proportional representation?
If you think this st show is bad, PR could not make it better. This requires strong decisive government. PR does not deliver thisvixen1700 said:

Surely common sense and collective responsibility would mean they should stagger their leaving times rather than drinking right up until the deadline. Or is the nation really just a bunch of pissheads?Seriously?

There’s even a financial incentive for the individual, to avoid Uber surge charging.
