Monmouthshire doesn't have a "local" lockdown so yes, you can. Assuming you are coming from England, anyway.
2/3 of the welsh population couldn't, though!

When I started this I was genuinely uncertain what to make of the article. PH have definitely helped me make my mind up; It seems that Welsh people are upset because:
1.A few are just ejits, just like everywhere else;
2.The Welsh Government is useless;
3.The UK Government is useless, but differently useless making for difficult to deal with inconstancies.
4.Ancient history, Edward 1st etc.;
5.More recent and relevant history- forced English language, reservoirs.
6.Local politicians stirring up dislike of the English for own selfish purposes.
7. Failure to provide affordable homes, which can then be conveniently blamed on the English (see 6.)

So my conclusion is that the anti English rhetoric around Covid whilst probably unfair, is understandable. Thank you!

You can travel anywhere in Wales on business.

And Monmouthshire should really be campaigning for English rule at this point laugh

You can indeed, though I did read an article the other day seriously suggesting that it would be illegal for people commuting into Cardiff from outside to buy a sandwich on the way into work, or do anything other than go straight there and back!

Old documents often mention "Wales and Monmouthshire" as if they are separate places - at least they are on the edge of the looney bin so they have some escape to the real world at the moment!

When Monmouthshire was officially created as a county in the 16th century, the Act of Parliament made it part of Wales.

Then there was a cock-up that left it out of some official list of Welsh counties, hence the use of "Wales and Monmouthshire", and the confusion wasn't resolved until the early '70s when the new counties like Gwent and Avon were set up.

I am Welsh, but now living in rUK. I’m proud to be Welsh, a big supporter of national identity, our rugby team, our wonderful countryside etc etc etc.

But I wonder how much longer the people of rUK will put up with Drakeford (& Sturgeon) grandstanding for their own domestic political ends without even pretending that it won’t be rUK picking up the tab.

At some point rUK may say “OK, your desire for self-determination has reached the point where we want you to assume budgetary responsibility. You made your bed, now go lie in it.”

It wouldn’t seem unfair or unreasonable. You want to go a different route / make different choices. Fine, if you pay for it.

Pembrokeshire was much the same. Police roadblocks during lockdown, 5 mile travel restrictions, the Council leader's rhetoric saying people should stay away, and most of the locals agreeing. Local shop owners were given £10k so didn't care if the tourists stayed away.
When lockdown finished and the tourists flooded oin, there was local resentment "they'll be bringing in the virus", "we dont want them" but nothing happened.
With very few cases, most of the locals aren't practicing social distancing, the pubs are packed, it's all getting ignored although there is mostly mask wearing in shops now.

They quite rightly banned people from their second homes for 4 months but still took the rates premium from owners...

I’m of English birth living in N E Wales less than a mile from the border.

Drakeford has no power to enforce the border, it’s not a devolved responsibility nor does he have the resources to effectively close the border.

That would require the assistance of every police force within Wales to set up checkpoints on every road straddling the border.

Take the A55 for example, in excess of 20,000 vehicles pass each day, now try and set up a road block to manage their point of origin.....it’s unworkable.

The police can't control county borders either, but that's somewhat besides the point.

If you're found at an event where you are deemed a high risk of spreading Covid by the rules, you should be fined.

Quite frankly, come Xmas, if it's the choice of 2 weeks self imposed quarantine and a £60 fine to see my family, it's an easy choice.

There are Senedd elections next year so all the politicians are trying to run with the fox and the hounds.

A lot of their constituents (those who run businesses and who know which side their bread's buttered) want tourists because they pay the wages, but those who don't run businesses but work in the public sector (lots of people - seriously) want the English tourists heads on poles all along the A55. As a rule the politicians will side with the locals and their anti-English rhetoric because of course the tourists don't get to vote in the upcoming elections.

Local facebook pages (particularly 'North Wales Live', owned by that purveyor of gutter journalism Reach PLC) are awash with divisive posts created as clickbait, and a lot of the locals with nationalist tendencies lap it up.

This is the calibre of a minority of people that exist where I live...

They did it in Pembrokeshire. Put a roadblock in on a major road, moved it every day. At the peak they were fining around 250 people a day. You don't need it everywhere just enough publicity to put people off stop them doing it.

At one point at the end of the M4 they directed everybody off and through the services to question their reason for driving. That didn't last long because of the tailback

There was a lot in pembrokeshire - 'we don't want them here' pushed by the council leader and councillors and has started again.

In case anyone is thinking of visiting the ‘far west of Wales’......

Mark Drakeford: “When they arrive in the far west of Wales, I'm afraid they will meet a local population that are fearful, that are anxious and are on the lookout for people who shouldn't be in those areas”.

I really cannot make my mind up whether this is evidence of a nasty racist undercurrent, or an entirely justified reaction, Either way, seems odd to be getting steamed up about visitors now- the summer season is definitely over.

Any thoughts?
Yep

The Welsh first minister is full of his own importance and thinks he is more relevant when he is.
The guy is a complete twaaat and it is all about him flexing his pecks more power to the moronic throbber etc

As this is a Welsh thread I feel it my public duty to print the all important welsh translation so that Mr Davies from the valley isn't outraged enough to complain to offcom

Mae prif weinidog Cymru yn llawn o'i bwysigrwydd ei hun ac yn meddwl ei fod yn fwy perthnasol pan mae.
Mae'r boi yn twaaat llwyr ac mae'r cyfan yn ymwneud ag ef yn ystwytho ei bigau mwy o rym i'r throbber moronig ac ati.
