July 5th he will go and meet the King, then get a briefing on nuclear weapons, write the letters, then appoint a cabinet and get to work.

Prepare for the dirtiest, most antagonistic and negative campaign that we’ve ever seen.

Quick question. Assuming the Tories lose, does Starmer become PM on July 5th or is there some delay/handover?
The victor would be straight in to see the King and would form the government immediately. In 2010 while the hung parliament negotiations were going on, Brown remained PM until Cameron could show he commanded a majority of MPs. Brown didn't do anything of note during that period but if the st had hit the fan in some major way a PM would have been in post to chair COBRA & lead the response.

Surely this will be one of the lowest voter turnouts ever at an election? I know loads of conservative voters who can’t face holding their nose and voting Tory but who also can’t face voting for the other options. What a state we’re in.

My thoughts. Tories dont deserve my vote but Labour most certainly dont either.

Hilarious that they're delaying his appearance because of the weather. I thought that was a trump thing? What if the rain doesn't stop?

I'd love a GE but have come to expect nothing but disappointment from this government.

This is before six weeks of having the message "better the devil you know" drummed into them by CCHQ and perhaps some of the loony left speaking out of turn and (hopefully not) international affairs coming onto the front pages.

Finally be rid of Mhairi!

At least that's a win, regardless of what else happens.

An election is going to be a disaster for the SNP.

Oh dear, what a shame.

Can't vote Tory, won't vote Labour, and everyone else is pretty much a wasted vote.

What a time to be alive.

Sunak resigns the day after and Starmer gets in if he is confident he has enough MPs that will support his government I suppose. Blair iirc became PM the day after the 97 election....?
I think technically as soon as a GE is called and they get through 'wash up' Government is dissolved, I'm sure there are contingencies for crisis etc.

I seem to recall the day after the election, parliament is recalled, the new MPs sworn in (there will likely be a LOT of new MPs) then they vote for who is going to be PM and then whoever wins goes off to the Palace to ask to form a Government. It's pretty quick.

Conservatives don't stand a chance in constituency, we currently have SNP, Labour is the only chance of getting rid of them.
Unfortunately.

I wish that idiot with the megaphone who must be in the crowd at the end of Downing Street would either turn it off or be taken away.
If it can be heard/picked up by correspondents outside no 10 with some serious volume it must be deafening for people stood near him.

It only really make sense if they think this is as good as things are going to get and it'll be downhill after the summer, and given they have all the data it seems quite plausible they know things will be getting even worse later in the year.

Would be funny if after all this speculation that it's in July, he just says October.
