You'll excuse me the tiniest of gloats? After all I don't get the chance that often!
please let that not be the pride that comes before a fall Pugs.

Mate, I regard it as my freefalling bet having slowed from a 200mph plunge to a 199mph plunge. Just allow me my little moment eh?

On the other hand lots of lovely loot made from RBS, LLOY & BARCS this morning so there's always a bright side!

Pugsey and I are having a bet on the future value of property. Specifically, we are betting on whether the average house price will be higher in a year's time than it is today. For the baseline we are using Halifax October 2008

http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/includes/HousePrice...

with an October 2008 average of £168,176 (this came out on Thursday 6th). When the October 2009 report comes out (should be the same day as the Nov MPC vote - 4th November), if...

a). the average house price is equal to or more than £168,176, Noel pays £250 to Poppy Appeal
b). the average house price is less than £168,176, Pugsey pays £250 to Poppy Appeal.

I will update this thread on a monthly basis with the Halifax numbers.
November 2008: -2.6%, average price £163,605

http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/includes/04_12_08Ho...
December 2008 -2.2% Average price £159,896

http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/includes/02_01_09Ho...
January 2009 +1.9% Average price £163, 966

http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/includes/05_02_09Ho...
February 2009 -2.3% Average price £160,327

It's actually not as bad as it looks. Halifax insist on dicking about with the seasonally adusted data. Non seasonally adjusted it only fell around 0.4%

Personally I think property is a good investment, but the average house price is going to be skewed by the amount of dross out there. Give it another 12 months and I'm with Pugsey though.

Tend to agree. When I took this bet I must admit I was thinking more in terms of the sort of thing I get involved in rather than the 'average' which, as you say is dragged down by the high percentage of grotty boxes out there. All good fun though - and it's only a bet after all, although in terms of the bet it looks as if I'll be looking for a mini boom (remember that word) over the next few months!

I bought a property like that once. Soon sorted out with a bit of underpinning! smile

Here comes the boom! Queues outside Estate Agents and for mortgages hurray! Oh, hang on that'll mean back to dinner party property bores (remember that breed?) droning on about how much money they've 'made' again.............

Anyway, thanks for posting NW. Just right for my own move on the 19th! smile

PS. Mods. Can we get this shifted to 'News Politics & Economics' by any chance?

Thanks Noel. Having moved house myself only two weeks ago it will be interesting to see how my own place follows/bucks the 'average' trend.

Did you massively overpay to drive up the average prices?
