Do you think he saw this trailer before he went?

(1:35 in)....Methinks that movies release in the UK might get a little delayed.

yes it is tragic, but consider this - what are grills used for ?

examples are in prisons to stop the inmates escaping and at the ends of pipes to stop people getting into the pipe

the kid got into the pipe and drowned

Where does bravery come into this?

It is like when someone is ill and fight it they are brave. No they are just doing what is natural.

He on the other hand lifted a grate and got sucked in. Yes it is sh!t, nothing more. I'm sure family and friends will think it sucks, but really it is just one of those things. No need to abandon Thailand or create a media outcry, lets just carry on regardless.

Read this in the Metro this morning.
Apparently the management wouldn't listen to them at first and it took 30 minutes before they would even check the pipe, at which point his body came out of it.

It also mentioned that the father got charged and fined £450 after he attacked someone who was trying to film his son's dead body with a mobile phone.

Horrific experience I imagine.
Another reason why I refuse to visit God-forsaken st-holes like Thailand.

Yeah. Stay in the UK, the cradle of civilisation where no-one gets stabbed to death for the 'wrong look', ever dies in accidents, or gets arrested by the Thought Police for littering, or protecting their property.

With an outlook like that you wouldn't be very welcome anyway.

Your loss.

Brave to try and rescue his goggles by shifting a metal grate at the bottom of the pool.

When I was lifeguarding (at my local pool built circa 1960) a girl got her hair sucked into the grills in the bottom of the pool. I got in and breathed for her, ie coming up to the surface for air, then diving down and giving her that air. Another lifeguard ran to get the scissors off reception to cut her hair with. The receptionist refused to let the scissors onto poolside because "they were sharp" she eventually relented with a barrage of foul language directed at her (she was later sacked for stupidity.
I got the scissors off the other lifeguard and cut the girl free. All was well until the mother turned up. And I got a bking for cutting her little girls hair.
Really? She's drowing under water and you passed air to her for a period of time while your mate went for scissors? I assume that kid was then rushed to hospital because the concpet of that being a fool proof solution to drowing only works in movies!

But a couple of things spring to mind.

The pool must be a really old pool. The outlet at the bottom system died out in the seventies. Any pool built (I would have thought worldwide) within the last thirty years will have the outlets at the surface of the water. This allows the scum and fats to float away rather than mixing it in and hoping that it disappears through the big hole in the bottom of the pool. Secondly, I'm afraid Roop is wrong on the diameters of the pipes. The pipes going to the filters from the pool are generally 18" diameter for an avaerage sized pool. More than enough for a 14 year old to be sucked into.
Rubbish.

Most if not all pools have a sump drain, how is it meant to be emptied otherwise? And how will you get proper circulation.

Depending on what size of pool you are specifically referring to the your pipe sizes are way. The biggest size is usually 6" as there is normally multiple pumps and filters on larger pools, not just one massive pump with one massive pipe going through it.

But I don't know what was in the pool in this instance in Thailand, I'm clearing up you UK generallisations.

So how did you come to the conclusion that Thailand is a "God-forsaken st-hole" if you've never been?

By reversing the flow of the pumps, just like when you do a backwash to remove the filtered waste from the system.

Well the last pool I worked at the diameters of the pipes were bigger. The pool is now probably 15 years old. 475 cubes of water in the indoor pool, 4 filters 4 pumps.

I'd imagine that if you were to go down to the level of the grate you'd be able to feel it sucking the water in?
Yes you do. I've swam over one before now (I used to a lot of underwater swimming as a kid and would show off and retrieve all things thrown in for me from the 12ft deep section etc), and it started to suck me in, and I was a good 2ft away at the time. From that point on I started to steer clear enough of the grate to ensure I wasn't feeling it sucking me in...

Really doesn't. There is a big difference between drowning and getting trapped underwater. One tends to come before the other. She was lucky that I got there as quickly as I did, but that was only because she had dived in and I was about to bk her when she surfaced. So I saw the whole thing happen.

Oh, and the mother refused to let us call an ambulance to take her to hospital, she said she would do it herself.

So yes, it did happen and it does work. HTH
