We certainly did better in the Falklands than the US did out of us in Vietnam - we loaned them some "special advisors"
And the Merchant Navy, IIRC.

Ah.. Selling us a missile is help? As far as I am aware, they refused us loan of an AWACS aircraft, to warn of incoming attacks, and refused us any ports or airfields of theirs that we could use. They may well have given us satellite imagery, but I know they rented us telecommunication lines. Either way, for a country that has been one of their staunchest allies, they treated us with some disdain, quite frankly.
Sorry but you know nothing
So you tell me, rather than rely on Eric.
Did they give us arms during WW2 no , so why should they not sell us missiles as we need them , they did rush through us getting the latest air to air missiles during the Falklands war

You do not know what you are talking about so back off and sit down

Have I? I knew about the missiles, (hell, even that's on wiki), and the telecommunications bandwidth they rented us, although only enough for telephone. Oddly enough, Lost Soul, you seem very aggressive for some reason, and I'm not sure why. I said I may be wrong as it was from a book I read many years ago, probably in the late 80's, but you seem to ignore that, and carry on with your little attack. I hope it makes you feel better.

Thatchers was obviously not overly impressed...

Sorry if i seemed aggressive , did not mean to be

But you came accross the same so i just countered beer

As has been said the US had to be carefull to be seen as neutral so they could continue the diplomatic side of the conflict , when in reality they were very much with us

We were refuelled by U.S. tankers sailing out of Chile, as well as Granted access to Chilean airfields and ports should we strike into Argentina.

Hastings and Jenkins' book is very clear that AWACS apart, no assistance was spared by the septics; often provided before request. Everything short of direct involvement in actual hostilities.

Didn't the Sun run one of their headlines; 'Yanks a Million'?

From what I can remember being told by my old Chief, the main reason AWAC's were not offered was that they needed to fly over restricted airspace and work in conjunction with other US hardware (possibly sub or carrier based) I can't remember which (both).

I love the way they refer to the islands by the Argie name - still. Jealous much?

You want it, come and get it. You'll get your ass handed back to you, again. This time what we're fighting for is on the table so there's a whole lot more to fight for.
If it does kick off, fingers crossed it'll only do so when (!?!) the tories get in - and they welcome the fight with the SAS/SBS/Marines/Paras open arms. It'd be CMD's first stand and would be a good reflection of the late 70's labour disaster followed by the tory revival of the once Great Britain.

Question is, who would the US back? Haven't the argies got their fingers in Obamas pants?
Well, they didn't really give us much help last time. I think we requested use of their airfields, but they refused.
You jest.
Nope. The US was determined to remain neutral in the conflict, and as far as I remember we asked about using their airfields, but they refused, which meant everything had to go via Ascension Island. I'll have a root about, as I may be wrong, but that's how I remember reading about it in Simon whatshisnames book.
Which airfields? Ascension was fine and the Yanks supplied a metric stload of supplies to us, provided satellite photos and assorted other intelligence.
And turned a blind eye to moving RAFG's 9L NATO dedicated stock dawn south too....

Also supplied the latest AIM 9 missiles for the Harrier fleet, or rather, speeded their supply as they were alreay due. Supplied via Delta Force Stinger missiles, satellite phones , satellite imagery and and other equipment to the SAS. The SAS had better coms back to the UK than the entire fleet thanks to the equipment supplied.
Basically, they couldn't be seen to have US aircraft, ships or troops involved, but could help out behind the scenes.

And if I remember correctly, isn't Ascension airfield (Wideawake?) leased to the Yanks as well? It was certainly built by them.

Yep, i think it's quite well known that the 9L version was a huge improvement over previous generations .. by contrast the Matra missiles used by the Argentines could only be fired with the target head on. My school prize was a book about missiles, strangely.

So broon is negotiating

Well i guess we give the argies

The falklands and all the oil

28 billion in compensation for beating them when they invaded

A free council house for everyone in argieland

3 container ships full of plasma tellys

The entire beatles back catalogue

The queen

Milton keynes

and in return we will get

A slightly rotten turnip
I don't think he's a good enough negotiator to get a slightly rotten turnip.
Half of a very rotten turnip?
ENOUGH...

Listen, Winky, two birds, one stone....

NUKE 'em....

You get to (1) sort the Argies and (2) solve the problem of decommissioning old Trident...

You know it makes sense....smile
