"Parents can also choose to give the ISP a list of adult sites they want to view."

yes just like all the other laws passed for "our safety" over the past decade, simply a way of controling the less determined majority . . . . . . .

hehe This is what Tinman and others have argued would happen because of ASSange. Now governments have the excuse. After porn filters (which no politician would be seen opposing), it is easy to block out political opposition etc. Oh, and who were those on here going on about how the internet cannot be controlled?

I still don't buy this notion that any one government can control the internet.

It's really difficult to accurately distinguish traffic types by content, especially when that content may be encrypted, incomplete or hidden from view or all three. It's also difficult to draw a dividing line between internet connected users who do not wish to be kept apart. It's even more difficult for a government to do so for all citizens.

They'd have to throw it away and start again and we're so heavily invested that I think that would be unlikely for some time.
Like China I think it'll be implemented as a site blacklist for HTTP/web addresses. This will prevent most of the 'think of the children' morons from accidentally accessing porn at least.
But......

What exactly is unhealthy about porn?

I don't mean that sicko Jap stuff, with some bloke pouring live maggots into some birds asshole through a funnel, whilst she scoffs down a plate of puke, before sucking off a dog, but just regular, normal porn like 'Strap on Sally', 'Angry Jailhouse Lesbians' or 'Bad babysitter 5'?

Can't we just shut the internet down fullstop? Wouldn't our lives be all the better for it?

Yup, first of many filters. The definition will get wider each time a government changes and they need a few extra votes.

I actually think that is true. Although the internet is an amazing thing, I think we all have to work harder as everything is 'now' and nothing is confidem goingntial anymore.

I would quite like it if it went away for ever.
I'm going to be completely honest here and say, I couldn't give a fk if the internet shut down tomorrow. I preferred it when you couldn't instantly uaccess information at the flick of a mouse, very liberating. Likewise mobile phones.
Is the internet any good for anything other than watching porn and getting free music?
Honestly?

Not sure what the problem is .. You'll have to tick the box asking 'do you wish to access porn?' .. simples.
The problem is that a government that claimed to be for smaller less obtrusive government is making government bigger and more intrusive.

It's not like they were acting against a real danger to children like priests (of any religion).

Great, now to define what Porn is.
Priests, independent of clothing or denomination, and nothing else?

Censors are intrinsically more problematic than anything they would censor...

I personally wouldn't hold too much truck with a very vague article - nothing wrong with consulting over how to make things safer for kids. With this government we'll no doubt see a damp squib of a suggestion, followed by a back track at some point.
