However, as with any country you have to be careful when visiting.
Sure, but this sort of thing will dissuade people from visiting Muslim countries for conforming to their rules does not match the upside of going there as a tourist.

Well, going to other countries should be about their culture, not your own. Expecting to have a british holiday in the Middle East is absurd.

"Nuke them from orbit" is bandied about plenty on here, but it's quite apt for this. Wipe this country off the map.
That's a tad disproportionate, no?
My views may be a tad extreme on occasion. hehe

Dubai, and Abu Dhabi are very relaxed, compared with the rest of the region, however that isn't to say that infractions will not be dealt with harshly. As someone said, there is alcohol, hookers, speeding, and it is very western. Just don;t cross that line, and any intelligent traveler should know where the line is in ANY country they go to.
So, pray tell, exactly which line do I not need to cross to ensure that I won't be beaten to death in a police cell? It hardly seems a proportionate punishment for any crime, no matter how 'harshly' these 'infractions' are dealt with.
Well 'the line' for this woman was passport control in the UAE. She crossed it. She should have stayed at home.

I am very ignorant about Dubai and the UAE, and I don't care. I don't ever want to go there. There have simply been far, far too many bad stories to come from those parts. And if I and millions of other travelers stay away, then the place may eventually drag itself out of the medieval age.

And we live in a nicer society here don't we? I'm far more relaxed about walking about at night in Dubai then I am in my own sthole of an area in London - a 5 year old girl got shot last week just up the road from me.

So you can't see the difference between an isolated incident that has provoked widespread concern and a massive police investigation, and institutionalized, state-sanctioned barbarity?

Medievel country with the luck to have oil. Sounds familiar. We should really put the oil in responsible, modern hands.

Actually Dubai hardly has any oil at all.

And yes, as folks have mentioned previously Dubai probably is a lot safer than many parts of the UK but at least the violence and killings which we see over here are not state sanctioned or carried out by agents of the state. (Although I suppose Dr Kelly's family may disagree with that one but that's another thread in itself....)

Apart from this one. Where visitors, tourists or otherwise have carte blanche to do what they like (following their cultural norm) as we are too scared of offending them?

Last year, Dubai residents living in London over the summer claimed they came here rather than anywhere else, because of our tolerance. If that's how bad it is over there, i don't blame them. However, I wish they'd stay over there. Since I've started spending most of my time in London, it's amazing how much trouble they cause compared to what they offer back to us.

They will be tough on crime and tough on the sources of crime.

Dubai, yet another backwards, medieval country, in a region full of backwards, medieval steholes.

Fair enough, they've done an alright job of polishing a turd with a few nice hotels, but the place and greater region is still a turd.
Best you don't read the G20 thread which at the moment is right next to this one...

(Dubai is a sthole though, granted)

Unfortunately because of what is happening in the rest of the region nothing will done here. The rulers depend on the police and security services to keep order and currently are bricking themselves as they look around the middle east. Already several local bloggers have been dragged out of their beds in the middle of the night only to vanish into the prison system.
I know 2 people who were beaten in Jail here, one probably deserved it (if you headbut a cop anywhere in the world expect a kicking) the other did nothing more than give a bit of lip, there is a culture of brutality in jail here that isn't going to change.
What I would like to know however is what responsibility Jumeirah hotels are going to take, they are ultimately responsible for what happened, not a good place to be when you are trying to sell hotel rooms for a grand a night.

Don't bother. Imagine a big sandy landfill with pyramids; that's what it's like, filth everywhere, and stench too. You don't see the piles of st and rubbish in the brochures, or the endless demands for baksheesh, or the persistent tat vendors. Pretty impressive seeing them up close, but I'm bloody glad I only paid £30 for the experience(I was transiting through the canal and had a day trip to Cairo in a taxi driven by Egypt's answer to Keke Rosberg).

Which has nothing whatsoever to do with them. You want a holiday where you can be British, go to the Costa Del Sol.

Which of the countries in the greater region have you spent any reasonable amount of time in?

There are very few countries in this great world where it is not possible to be beaten or assaulted in police custody. Why pick on Dubai?
