Churchill united the nation.
Far from it.

The 'everyone loved Churchill' is a travesty of the truth. The first chance the population got they voted him out. My maternal grandmother hated the man.

In my area, the east London, the general feeling was that he made too many tactical errors to be a great wartime leader. Even my father, who was a grudging supporter of the man, accepted that he cocked some things up spectacularly.

The revisionist historian after the war were limited as to what they could write about a man who was touted as leading the defence of the realm. The myths have stayed although there are a number of histories out there now which do not follow the 'come the time' bit and look at Churchill's history.

Propaganda put out that everyone was behind Churchill but some had knives in their hands. Whether he was a brilliant and effective wartime leader is open to debate - I'd certainly support effective overall - but what is true is that he did not unite the nation.
I'm not saying you're wrong but bloody hell, of course he made mistakes. There was a monumental task before him so of course he made mistakes, he wouldn't of been human if he hadn't.

Anyway Doctor Who likes him & that's good enough for me.

Scargill and the NUM will be there to picket the gravediggers and the Nottinghamshire miners will jump in there to dig her grave .............

Irrespective of the truth it is seen up North that Mrs Thatcher wanted to close all the pits and the Union wanted to keep them open. Mrs Thatcher, the police and strike breakers are still massively hated here.
I know of two families here, 1) one brother doesn't speak to the other (strike breaker). 2) father doesn't speak to son (policeman).
This is the important bit. Stupidity is not an excuse for an opinion, or a stance.

No chance I'd imagine. No other Prime Minister has received a state funeral since Churchill and her relationship with the royal family is nothing like Churchill's was.

Private funeral with a memorial service at Westminster Abbey is the best bet.
It's planned and sorted. The royal family have little to do with it. Blair was PM at the time it was agreed. Me being a cynic, thinks if she gets one for ten years in power, Blair agreed it as he was nearing ten years when he gave it the nod. So down the line he gets one too. Although he may have blown that by his change of religion. Whatever, when you are dead you're dead. Who cares if you're pulled by horses on a gun carriage or buried in a cardboard coffin.

She saved the country, embodied Britishness in a way largely lost today, and deserves a full state funeral.

The sad thing about it is that many of my friends on Facebook, mostly those who like me work in the media, can't wait for her to fall of her perch. It's a sad state of affairs where people look forward to a death on political grounds no matter what leaning they take.

The thing is I get on really well with most of them, just when it comes to politics I can't believe people who I would otherwise see as intelligent and rational would turn in to somebody I can't understand.

Probably because they have an opinion, despite not actually knowing what actually happened.

Some who are the same age as me (early 30s) seem to hate her for the sake of hating her. Other who are more in the 40 range and have a more valid memory go on about 'you weren't there so you don't understand'.

I wasn't there and no, I don't fully understand it, but it's the attitude of somebody who wants another human to die and will celebrate when they do sickens me.

Well I'm 35, and only have a very vague recollection, but reading about it educated me on the issue. She may have been direct, and terse, but she needed to do what she did, before the country was on its knees. Skargill, and the likes, used this to raise their essentially socialist, seriously bordering on communist platform, and dragged the country to its knees through stikes, and killed off what was still a sustainable industry, just without the subsidies.
