Someone on another forum came up with what I thought was a good idea. Bring in Anthony Gormley to produce something monumental to fill the gap - maybe even a tree?
Now I am angry. That tt. Can go fk himself.

(Resident of Sefton, where one of his installations doesn't bring in enough tourists to justify the on going cost to residents)
There's probably a deal to be done then wink

I think he also objected to people putting clothes on "him".

When I've done the Parkrun they'd put a cone on the head of one of the statues to show the turn around point.

Monumental public art has its place; I don’t believe it has any place at Sycamore Gap. It would be no substitute for what has been lost in my view.

Replant with a mature standard, if possible, and hope nature prevails.

Unless it's been poisoned as well as felled I read that sycamores regrow quickly. I'd say manage that managed regrowth'd be a nice thing to do.

It certainly needs something at the site in recognition of what's lost. This wasn't just a tree, it was a living monument that meant different things to different people. It's become even more symbolic now it's been cut down, that could become a good thing.

As has been suggested - the tree will probably keep growing and do so quicker than any sapling. But it wont magically regrow with one stem/trunk, it will be myriad small shoots that will thicken over time like a big shrub.

If the people who cut it down are found they cover all costs, fix any damage to the wall and plant a new tree.
A few decades later and some other arse will cut that one down too no doubt.

People do bad things for no reason at all, if they cause harm or damage to property or in this case a national treasure then they must be given punishment to the extent of the crime it must be made clear it doesn't happen again.
A few decades? Don't you mean 300 years.
Shortly after we moved into our previous house the council planted a sycamore sapling a few yards from our back fence. It was maybe 6 foot tall and 3-4 inches in diameter.
30 years later, by the time we moved, it was vast - about the size of the gap tree - and totally overshadowed our garden. They are very fast-growing.

Can't fault his intentions to be fair. Just his understanding. Seems they moved the tree to another location on their land.

A replacement is unlikely so I guess a sucker from the stump is the best option. Hope the culprit is found and a proper example made of him though.

It's not jus a tree though is it, I think that would be pretty clear by now. It may not mean anything to you, but it does to a large number of people.

No chance of an example being made.

The same week as this tree felling story, the teenager who went armed with a knife to school and stabbed his teacher in the abdomen, recently in Tewkesbury, was sentenced.

He'd text family to say sorry in advance, and called 999 to tell them what he was about to do - so clear planning and intent.

He got 14 months.

What do we reckon a criminal damage charge (at best) will get?

Write a letter to say sorry and pick up litter for an afternoon?

There seems to be a massive amount of social media speculation, but is any of it actually informed? Suspect it’s gossip and rumours.

It's just a tree. A single tree that means something to a few people.

It's weird, maybe British parochialism.
