its going to end up tracking up the east coast of the usa way out to sea
Don't they pick up strength whilst out at sea and then can change course ?
they can but the models are showing it doing a loop then heading up the coast

I don't think Irma has followed the path it was anticipated to have just a few days ago.

Are people who are in hotels in curfew areas literally confined to their rooms?
They can walk around the hotel but not the streets, it's a misdemeanor offence if the police catch you in the streets when under curfew.
Running on generator power here - still storm-force in south Orlando.

Curfew rules vary by county in Orange, there is a road curfew until 6.00pm EST Monday. You won't get ticketed for being outdoors on foot.

How did Naples fair in the end? Has the storm surge happened as predicted?

I was watching the local news channel from there earlier and they reported storm surge in the region of 5ft and some of the most powerful winds (140mph at the airport) but it wasn't as bad as they originally predicted.
I've friends with a house in Naples (they live in the UK though) so I'm paying close attention to that area.

Ok - so just had a call from a buddy on Marco Island. House is still there. Missing all shingles from roof but the paper underneath is watertight and in tact. No major water damage internally - the odd leak from the roof I suspect. Some of the lanai screen has blown through, but the structure still stands. No flooding from 'the surge' (new film title??).

Will have to wait now to see what the score is with my business...

Fortunetly my house was built after the 2001 rules came into force but haven't heard from my tenant yet about any damage, I think we got it light on the west coast.
Miami Dade codes? IIRC they are designed to withstand 130mph winds. We also have to build to Miami Dade but we doubled everything up when we built which in theory should basically withstand 4 times the force or double the wind speed. Having seen the damage to buildings I know in BVI though I now have zero faith and wish we had paid up and done a concrete slab roof instead!

Walked to the local convenience store this a.m., for bread and coffee filters, and there on the paper rack, it was all in perspective.
Florida's getting smashed by Irma, North Korea's firing off missiles, but on the front page of The Sun, "Coleen says that she and Wayne need extra time."
That's it then folks, we can all relax.

Incredible to see the images of 90-130 mph winds in Florida when Barbuda, St Martin and BVI had 185mph sustained and 225mph gusts! Unbelievable!
Quite.

I can see how the issues in Florida aren't pleasant and are unenviable to say the least but the "hell on Earth", " pray for us" etc reactions seem at odds with the relative magnitude of what was seen on the islands.

I've not see anything like the devastation on the mainland as to what was seen earlier in the week. And the difference in terms of infrastructure and means to recover are huge.

I feel for all involved, but those islanders have not and are not receiving anything like the coverage or support that Florida's getting.
They have been relying on a local radio station giving out information on St. Martin. Today is the first day the UK have landed an evacuation plane to get GB passport holders off. Dutch, Canadian and USA have been doing it since Friday. Looting, murders and rapes being reported.

It's disappointing that the Dutch and the French haven't done more to help more people like this couple.

Almost the entire population of Barbuda, BVI and Turks are also British citizens! The UK's minimal resources in the area have been totally overwhelmed dealing with our own islands so it's hardly surprising that the UK hasn't been quick off the mark to rescue Brits on other islands. That said, given the size of our overseas aid budget the lack of response has been quite disgusting. It wouldn't exactly have been skin off anyone nose to send a few Hurcules in to pick up Brits on other islands. I still wonder wtf these people thought they were doing not evacuating or properly preparing though!

it is first world problem though I mean the people who live on the island most on a pittance have lost what little they have. When you go on holiday in hurricane season there is always this risk.

because they are self entitled morons who went on holiday to the Caribbean during hurricane season and now want UK gov/holiday companies/ uk tax payers to pick up the cost of their own crappy choices

I know there's a lot of places badly affected by this so i do understand.
My son's partner was working there and was supposed to be flying out last Tuesday so had tried to prepare.
