The 3rd and final core began to rise yesterday!

Considering the current state of the UK, is this actually something to be proud of? Trying to keep up with the Dubai's and China's of this world?

We should be getting back to actually making money rather than this rather bling bauble decorating a withered hand...

wake up. A few thousand people will be employed in this building. tourisim to the viewing galleries will generate huge amounts to local economy. a 7 star hotel will do the same. Oh and it will be the tallest building in western Europe.

It doesn't even get into the top 40 of the worlds tallest buildings, so its hardly trying to keep up with Dubai and China, is it?

Its going to be a magnificent structure, and definitely something to be proud of. Renzo Piano definitely draws up some stunning buildings.

When I used to work in London, the view out of the office windows was quite inspirational - the gherkin visible on one side, tower bridge and city hall on the other. I never expected the structures to inspire in the way they do, but if work ever got me down I'd just look out of the window, see some of these things and it'd put a spring in my step.

Do you also think that building faster cars is useless as well?

Well, I went on an unplanned journey to Camden Market on Saturday (still a great place to people watch) and decided that I might as well go see the Shard for myself...

yikes

That thing is visible from opposite the London Eye!

Drove around the base of it and was mightily impressed. Its going to look superb when finished.

I done the same, went for a drive around London last night and had to see the Shard myself. It was dark so not a very good view because obviously its dark and against a black sky it wasn't too visable, but from right underneath it its incredible. Will be going back in the light one time to see it.

A bad, (VERY BAD) picture from my iPhone last night.

Changed trains at London Bridge yesterday, and the Shard certainly looks impressive looming over platform six! Amazing how fast it seems to have gone up. Pinnacle to watch next.

Tbh you sound like a layman in terms of construction.

Whilst planners are the bane of my professional life, and currently my personal one too, I'm pretty glad we've got a robust system in place. London wouldn't be the same if it ended up looking like Coventry with a pocket of highrise.
I wouldn't refer to the system as 'robust' that is for sure. It is inconsistent at best, I am quite frankly astonished with some of the things that gain approval...

Where I used to live in Kent, the local council approved a housing estate to be built in the grounds of a castle. One rather large town house was but a stone-throw from the castle and completely ruined the look/feel of the castle and its surrounding area.

Furthermore, many people I know in the construction industry know how to exploit certain loopholes to get what they want. The only problem is that is a a rather long and arduous process blighted with bureaucracy.

Regarding your Coventry point - Does Canary Wharf not constitute a 'pocket of highrise' then?

Seven? Doesn't that involve an unblemished road from airport to hotel without a single set of traffic lights? How the fk are they going to arrange that?

And, it will be the tallest building in Europe for about a month. Bragging about it is a bit pathetic.

Where in Moscow is the tower? I go once a month with work and could take some updated pictures. I'll ask a couple of people I work with there if they have any more info on it. Surprised I have not seen it as I stay in central Moscow a lot, but I guess I've not been looking for it

I don't know if I've said this before but apart from being the tallest building in Europe for a short while this is also Europes 1st Supertall building (300m+).

Thats a pretty big feather in London's cap!
What's the tallest building coming up that you eluded to?
The Mercury tower in Moscow will be 380m tall, 70m taller than the Shard. Its in construction now but is some way behind the Shard.

Here's the finished look:

...and here's where they are on 12th September 2010:

wink

Jiffy, its here..

ahhhh, it's the opposite side to Kurskaya where one of our offices is and it's nearly at the outer ring road. It's not quite central central Moscow which is why I have not seen it. If I get the chance in a couple of weeks, I'll go on the metro and take some piccys.
