The scandinavian model of "socialism" seems to work quite well.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Danish PM, said "I know that some people associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."

The Nordic model is just capitalism with higher taxes. Very limited state intervention in business, very limited state ownership of companies (the Swedes embraced privatisation). They embrace global capitalism and free trade. No national minimum wage. They don't intervene to protect even their largest companies.

It's a long way from Momentum/Labour's policies.

I know that i will be starting THE TOURIST, on or about the 15th of february; which will be 20 mil. i will then go, virtually, straight into PIRATCS 4, for 35 mil and then in turn to DARK SHADOWS for another 20 mil. i hope that by the amount that will be coming in from work in the coming year and also from back end proceeds, etc., will put everything straight.

what else can i do??? you want me to sell same art??? i will. you want me to sell something else??? sure… what??? boat is going to be chartered at new years and sony will then charter it for the TOURIST shoot in venice. other than that, i got bikes, cars, property, books, paintings and some semblance of a soul left, where would you like me to start???

i don’t like being in this situation, but there wasn’t a whole lot of choice, as THE RUM DIARY was a sacrifice we knew would be happening and the last proper paycheck was PUBLIC ENEMIES.

i will do my best, joel.
You can imagine the thread title "$75million P.A. salary and still struggling, what sort of life can I expect?"
That email reminded me of a Matt le Blanc line in Episodes where he is having money issues. His accountants tell him he has to sell a house that his father lives in. Matt says:
"I told them that you can't put a price on family. It turns out you can. They showed me a spreadsheet and everything."

A 'DJ' from Radio 1 was on R4 this morning gushing over the prospect of JC introducing an act at Glasto - in line with McDonnell's involvement mentioned upthread.

This is the Glasto where money buys you a better view, yes? Better campsite, nicer food, better access, more luxuries. It's that kind of progressive socialism JC stands foursquare behind.

Perhaps the cutting edge comedians on R4 this evening will line up to tear them a new one...or not.

The next UK government needs to be progressive,
Can someone explain what "progressive" means? It is bandied about by left-of-centre politicians, who, judging from the context, consider it to be a Good Thing. But I've never heard any of them explain what they actually mean. Or is it a soundbite like motherhood and apple pie?
I've always taken it as Lefty speak for increasing taxes
Progressively increasing taxes, while the take tends towards £0.

Not now, but they would be able to if Corbyn gets in and lowers the voting age. Not too difficult to see where he's going with this.

No more 99p menu at KFC/Maccers. The masses will revolt. Added, if you have to pay a 16yo the same as a 19 year old there will be less work for the younger ones as generally they lack maturity/common sense

won't this encourage young people to ditch school and higher education? Giving 16yos the vote is even more frightening. Corbyn continues to shake the tree!

Good point. In fairness it's Friday and I'm struggling already.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard (would put pay to one local business who employs everybody on 0 hour contracts and doesn't give hours to those whenever they become eligible for a higher wage though!)

Surely this'll just lead to huge youth unemployment and/or less education resulting in a huge band of future blue collar's

Yep. Plus apprenticeships will cease, the price of goods/services will go up. Building costs will go up because there will be a lack of trades coming through. Under Corbyn the poor will get poorer.

There will be capital flights out of the UK. Recession, property collapsing, FTSE same. Depression

I fully support a £10 an hour living wage for older workers but that is a recipe for mass youth unemployment.

The young need to both learn a trade and how to operate in a working environment.

I'm beginning to think the tree needs shaking and it's pretty simple, if you shake it and people don't like it they won't vote for it, if they do they will.

Personally I've never quite got how at 16 you're old enough to leave home, leave school, get a job (paid less than someone older doing the exact same thing), pay taxes, but have absolutely zero say in any of the policies that might impact you in doing any of the above.

Is there a market for employing 16 year olds at £3.50 per hour?

Will raising this to £10 per hour improve this market or have an adverse effect?

Is £3.50 ph an easy target because it's so low? Indeed who sets this, the Low Pay Commission?
