Don4l - you were going to respond about the imminent sacking of 500 BBC employees.........
Imminent?I didn't suggest any such thing.
between the BBC production staff, OB staff, editing staff, admin, liaison, etc. you're probably already well over 100 just for starters, then consider the financial effect of loosing TG, yes, it's not all day 1, but the back archive can only be sold so many times, the immediate loss of series 22 is going to hurt, they already have contracts to some 180 countries for that that they can no longer fulfill (are they going to have to pay compensation?).
over a reasonable timeframe, I can see an annual loss of way over the £50m quoted (hell, the live shows are quoted at £11M income), so yes, realistically either they fnd more money from somewhere else, or significant cost cutting is required.

What's with all the photographs of Clarkson on a bike? And who has Clarkson been socialising with and getting support from during this "difficult" time of his? Is that Boris Johnsons sister, I hear you say? This whole thing stinks, and the timing with the election looks suspicious. I know this could sound a bit tin foil hats are us, but think about it...who thinks the Tories would definitely not stoop to these Machiavellian levels? Hmmmm...So what could the Tories possibly gain from this, erm, distraction? It's all about the BBC and the narrative of political bias within the media. Now coming up to this election the inherently fearful nature of those running the BBC will become apparent, and so anything that pits the BBC against a good friend and supporter of Cameron can only be good thing for the conservatives, as it subconsciously helps to negate any evidence that the BBC has been infiltrated by neocon stooges.
So that's all explained then.TTwiggy said:

if the beeb wanted it to continue they could of quickly and easily dropped in A.N.Other into the role
Instead they are busily taking all the sets to pieces and skipping them
Topgear as we know it has gone

I can guarantee that the £100k average cost per employee is completely made up. Not wishing to cause offence but its almost as if you've taken the £50m figure, and divided it by 500 to come up with a £100k cost per employee. Off the top of my head here are some of the costs for large employers that I've worked for
£90m 4000 employees (NHS)
£55m 1500 employees (Home Office NDPB)
£12m 200 employees (ACademy)
Average salary in the UK is ITRO £26k. Salaries tend to be between 60% and 80% of employee and related costs. Put simply, it's nowhere near a £100k average.
After having said all that, what you don't appear to have realised is that the £50m is income from historical sales. It's going to keep flowing in, at least in the near future. If the beeB don't manage to relaunch TG and IF they can't find other equivalent programmes then this income stream will gradually reduce. However it's definitely not going to disappear overnight and it's not going to lead to the loss of 500 jobs.

Bugger. This is going to test my "quoting" abilities.
Top Gear, according to the BBC, makes a profit of £50m per annum. Without Top Gear, this income will eventually dry up. The BBC may try to keep the show going with different presenters, but I don't think that it will work any better than the last time. So, I believe that this income will be lost.
For large organisations, the average cost is £100,000k per employee. This figure includes salary, rent for office space, business rates, electricity etc. So, if the BBC loses £50m, then it must cut 500 jobs.
Equally, I cannot agree that 500 people should lose their jobs because one person misbehaved.

I'm genuinely interested in how you have worked out that 500 jobs will be lost. I have a (admittedly limited) understanding of cost accounting for TV companies and, give how the BBC operates (permanent posts, internal secondments, agency staff, contractors, outsourced or shared services) I'd be surprised if even the production Accountant could say with any degree of certainty that 500 posts will be lost. For large organisations, the average cost is £100,000k per employee. Countdown, the figures that you quoted for the NHS and Home Office are based on salaries alone. I'm not sure about the Academy (£60,000 seems high for an average salary in a school).
There are lots of other costs associated with employing people. There is rent, rates electricity and heating. People need to be housed in a comfortable environment. Then there are equipment costs. PC's, mobile phones, desks and chairs.
My gut feel is that this all adds up to about £100,000 per employee.
The BBC is not a profit making organisation. So, if it loses £50m, then it must make cuts. You will undoubtedly suggest that they can make cuts in other areas, but if the can then they should do so anyway. They cannot increase the license fee before 2017.
BTW, I didn't start out with 500 jobs and work backwards. The £100k figure is one that I assumed because I am aware of the costs in my own business.
Of course, if we use your NHS figures, then the BBC will have to lay off 2,250 employees. But you had already worked that out, hadn't you?

Where it would get expensive is if there's no replacement, or there's a replacement that crashes and burns. If the Top Gear brand is totally destroyed then yes, you'd have a big hole in the BBC Worldwide accounts. But we're a very long way from that at present.

It's been running for at least two years on BT Sport. But I guess you don't get outraged by the actions of commercial channels.
It even says in Radio Times and other media "First Shown on BT Sport", so it's not even a new BBC paid for & produced show, which some people appear to think it is All they're doing is showing the episodes, that have probably already been broadcast umpteen times on BTS, just like Dave do with old TG episodes, ad infinitum On a side note, I had to chuckle when I popped into Tesco at lunch and saw what was released on DVD today:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Top-Gear-The-Patagonia-Spe...
I assume it was originally meant to tie in with being released the day after what would have been the "final" episode of the current run - unfortunate timing
