I wonder if Moon told Trump he was meeting Kim before it happened.

If he didn't he needs to wake up a bit, he's in danger of driving a wedge between SK and the US, which is exactly what NK wants.

The US is covering SK's ass, and he needs to remember that.

Anyhoo, Singapore is back on (as I speak, who knows, perhaps we need to rename the thread Donald Trump, how serious should we take him?)
certainly prompted the US to come back to the table.

Seems like this was the catalyst for that back tracking.

I agree that the last thing SK needs right now is to have the US leave, but it really won't take much for the SK people to start up protests against US occupation once more. As short as 10 years ago those were happening, kicked off by pretty much nothing, just SK media frenzy.

Trump has one hell of a fine line to walk here.
Much of SK, China, Russia and NK want the US out of SK. The reasons for the US staying in SK are diminishing rapidly... though as poor a diplomat as Trump can be, Kim is likely to ruin all of this way before anything is actually decided smile

Good job he's so adept at subtle nuance and reading a situation then

It benefits both the US and a big part of the South Korea population for the US to have a large military presence there. The US isn't doing it as some kind of favour. Arguably, since China started flexing its muscles in the South China Sea, the US need for friendly bases/radar sites in the area has increased.

If Trump wasn't such a dick none of this would have come to the boil.

Stupid move by Kim here.

Might get some pocket money from it though which I guess is what all of this is about.

Or somewhere nice and safe (and protected by Russia) to carry on developing his missiles and warheads once he agrees to be a good boy in the summit with Trump.

Everyone falling over themselves to meet him, they smell trade deals and the chance to get rich. He must be feeling very important.

North Korea is sitting on a stockpile of minerals worth trillions.

Embedded deep beneath the country's mountainous zones are some 200 varieties of minerals, including gold, iron, copper, zinc, magnesite, limestone, tungsten, and graphite. Some of these stockpiles are among the largest in the world..

Yes but if he behaves like a good little boy then he can get offers from other countries he can conduct negotiations and he doesn't have to bend over and let China take it from him in a single offer deal only. He can take the highest offer, with a touch of military arms on the side. And the cake factories can be restarted.

I imagine Trump's plan is nothing more complicated than having a word in KJI's shell-like to the effect of "stick with me kid and I'll make you rich, we'll sort some contracts out that will spread a bit of cash through your country and you will be hailed as even more of a hero than you are now". Given the age difference between the two, I imagine Trump expects to be able to take some sort of fatherly stance when they're alone together, spinning him some down-home US-style hokum.

One false move after a deal is struck and Trump will flatten those cake factories.

Incentive enough for Kim to tow the line surely.

A regular supply of pies should do it.

Going by how camp the hugs and handshakes were between the 2 Korean leaders were, and how awkward the Don and Macron love in was. This could be comedy gold.

Going to have to set the recorder for this. Just in case.

Edit. Are they going to be introduced like two love sick animals at the zoo that have never met, cautiously and with handlers in the wings to dart them if they get nasty?

There's a really simple solution to all this. Make Kim, King Kim I with a unified country that's governed from Seoul. That way Kim gets to keep his 'royal / emperor' status with USA backing and the rest of the unified country might move forward. TBH, this'll be no harder than unifying East & West Germany. Ok perhaps I'm being simplistic wink
