The news painted a grim picture tonight.

The health service has commandeered a hotel for quarantine purposes

Deaths and infected numbers up.

Anyone else thinking 28 days later
It’s a hotel for those currently trapped on the cruise ships.
And a couple of jets worth after. I’ve stayed there and to be frank they’ll wish they were back on the ship.

The shopping locally is crap too.

Biggest population control is putting money in the population’s pocket.

This is doing the reverse so it can’t be that.
The Nazis had a good try at it, it has to be said.
Does that count as Godwins?

Whilst I don't think this is the 'big one' it is a little worrying that Covid-19 has killed more people in the last 6 days as SARS did in total.

So I’ve been out of the loop. I’m hearing this has all blown over and everything is ok now?

Sounds like it was blown out of all proportion.

I can’t think of anywhere better to buy a shopping trolley and a washing up bowl than Hounslow West Homewares.

Depends on your version of ok. Global infections are on the rise and around 150 Chinese people dying each day.

It hasn't seemed to take hold outside of China thankfully.

You really did think you were buying that shopping trolley for a quid, didn't you? hehe

Or decades of CCP policy on pollution (and smoking) has come home to roost, and it's having it's worst effect amongst the elderly members of the population. In a culture which still has an enhanced respect for the elder generation, borne of the Confucian tradition, you can see why the CCP would want to limit the outbreak as much as possible.

Was it your mate who was going to be running the marathon in Tokyo, BTW - is he still going?
Tokyo is now only allowing elite athletes to run the race. He had his flights etc booked months ago so he is still going for a holiday

So can we conclude from this that his crystal ball as regards fallout from the Wuflu might be...a bit cloudy? I mean, he didn't see that coming, did he?

Not sure what your point is but he booked his flights last year so clearly nobody knew this was coming back then

Didn't he tell you at a dinner party just a couple of nights ago that he would be running?

Yes. Clearly not his decision to postpone. That was up to the Japanese authorities.

But as an apparent medical authority on all things Wuflu, he didn't think that it was likely? Or even a possibility?

If he didn't, what do the Japanese authorities know that he doesn't?

If he did, then was he being entirely candid with you?

You have totally lost me.

He booked a flight months ago for the marathon. If it was on he would be running. Its not on so he is still going to watch.

Not sure what your point is

Am I the only one thinking allowing the elite athletes to run is daft? “I know, let’s put the best of the best at risk!”

For a lot of athletes its the last chance to qualify for the Olympics. Not sure what will happen to the Olympics themselves though

The point being that you rounded off your account of dinner with this chap with his apparent firm belief that he was going to run at the Tokyo marathon, hence giving weight to the earlier statements you claimed he made.

That, obviously, isn't going to happen.

Either he was - as an apparent medical expert - genuinely being mistakenly optimistic about it happening, or he wasn't being completely truthful with you. Either way, it puts a certain context on your other assertions about what he said, and his competency in the matter.

Not that it matters in the least, unless you're planning another "eat 'n' post" dinner in the near future.
