THe Russians did 'plan' to build four supercarriers, it's been postponed for the moment. Does anyone reckon they'll actually get made?

It will be interesting to see how this works out.....

India has signed a deal with Russia to acquire the S-400 air defence missile system, despite the possibility such a move could trigger US sanctions. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the $5bn (£3.8bn) deal in Delhi on Friday.

bbc said:
Washington has put several Russian firms under sanctions. The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (Caatsa) was introduced in 2017 to target Russia, Iran and North Korea with economic and political sanctions.

It also prohibits any country from signing defence deals with these nations.

But US President Donald Trump has the power to provide waivers to some countries. India was hoping to secure one, but recent statements from some Trump administration officials have sent mixed signals.
If the Russians can still strike these multi billion dollar arm deals then the sanctions act seems a bit pointless.

The West can bankrupt Russia, just needs the combined will and the ability to clear up the subsequent mess.

Good news for the Russians - in the event of a nuclear war Putin promises them a place in heaven.

“If any nation decides to attack Russia with nuclear weapons, it may end life on Earth; but unlike the aggressors, the Russians are sure to go to heaven, President Vladimir Putin has said.
“Any aggressor should know that retribution will be inevitable and he will be destroyed. And since we will be the victims of his aggression, we will be going to heaven as martyrs. They will simply drop dead, won’t even have time to repent,” Putin said during a session of the Valdai Club in Sochi.”

He’s has also been reminicing about the USSR again.

“SOCHI (RUSSIA) (AFP) -
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said the citizens of many former Soviet Republics regretted the collapse of the USSR, which he described as a "great state".”

Demonstrably true, and thus hardly controversial!

After dinner speaking isn't really his thing is it. It sounds like he's borrowed a few of his punchlines from the Koran ffs.

Well of course it did. His displays of paranoia feed theirs.

He must be about to roll his tanks into somewhere else.

Putin is many things but he's no idiot.

They will invade countries that will roll over and take it with impunity as it's good for votes, but he won't ever make the mistakes of the past trying to invade countries like Afghan, Ukraine was a good demonstration of the action the west will take while he does it. He knows as long as he doesn't directly threaten the west that they won't touch Russia. Let's be honest what can we do over here, we couldn't dream of putting up an offensive action against Russia, even a defensive action would be more or less futile. There is only the nuclear deterrent and mutually assured destruction that is preventing Russia rolling across Europe.

If he did roll into one of the former bloc countries on his border do you really think the west would risk the destruction of millions of lives for it by launching a nuclear assault?

that's one of the scary things about new russia, the surge in religion. ALl the shows that go to russia to show the russian people (that fat scottish comedian, that bloke that walks), they all show the rise and fervent belief in twaddle...it's very scary.

nuclear war will be sparked by india/Pakistan...well it's getting hot between the muslims and Christians in south Russia too.

Happily Trump has just announced that America won't be starting any nuclear wars.

Which is nice.

I watched a video on that (maybe from the YouTube thread?). Part of why the Russians got Crimea so easily is that the US told the Ukrainians not to worry and that they would handle it through diplomacy and economics. A few days of being rolled over while the west did SFA and Ukraine soon got the message that they were on their own!

It puzzles me that it's still ongoing though. The Russians could obviously take much more if they applied their full military might, and the Ukranians have put up a far more spirited defence/resistance than was expected, what, four(?) years ago. Is it just a way of draining the Ukrainin economy by keeping them in perpetual warfare? A means of training troops? It seems deliberately endless.

What was the result of Russias last incursion into Georgia? Did they just give the government a good telling-to, or did they slice off some territory as well?

According to press reports, Putin presently holds a fifth of Georgia.

You make a good point with regards to E Ukraine. Yes ok, he's got Crimea, but what's the point in half heartedly pissing about in the East. Either fully invade or don't. Unless he's taking everyone for idiots (like he normally does) and is trying to represent this as the locals wanting to exercise a bit of good old victimised Russian self determination (cue Octoposse stage left).

Easy answer, all of the times.
