...or cars...

Texas by example will no longer require an annual vehicle inspection.

I'm personally all for a relatively small state but some stuff is just sensible.
Behind the times there it seems - more than a dozen US states have no mandatory car inspections (safety, emissions, VIN etc) whatsoever. Though the lawyers waste no time pointing out that their fees in the event of an accident involving a poorly maintained car could dwarf the costs saved through neglecting maintenance.

I think he UK is far more aligned with European thinking than US thinking.

Having worked in the US (SC mainly) the attitudes of some individuals made me very uncomfortable, even if they were very pleasant and welcoming to me.

Conversely, I have very similar attitudes to a few french and German colleagues I am good friends with....

The gulf is between US and Europe and US and UK, IME.
Agreed. I’ve worked for 2 large US companies over the years and they remain a largely alien species to me.
Yep, our head office is in Atlanta, with a large office in Arkansas and it can be very strange sometimes.

Have a Ukrainian colleague in Atlanta (been in the US about 15 years) and he still finds the easy availability of guns to be unsettling.
Another colleague (born in Arkansas) home schools his children mainly because of concerns about school shootings, which is just surreal to me.

I quite like Atlanta (aside from the traffic and heat in the summer)... the "old school" southern politeness surprised me after years of NY/Boston and SF.

Great food and nice vibe.

Still wouldn't live there.

It's changed a lot over the last few years - I think COVID had a big impact on the hotels and restaurants. My favourite hotel completely scrapped their breakfast restaurant (which had an in restaurant omelette chef!) And replaced it with a baby Starbucks. Several restaurants I used to frequent have gone downhill too.

Love Boston and desperately trying to find excuses to go back, but since we closed the office there, I can't find one...

Would agree about the Southern friendliness - they're definitely a polite and welcoming bunch.

Maybe the anti-gun lobby should post some spoof adverts to get the message across?

"Recognising that other sellers rely on the customer to choose the right kit, we've analysed the market and put together these bespoke packages to optimise your results.

The Schoolyard Slaughterer: This custom package uses our special high velocity rounds that we've rigorously tested to ensure they will penetrate the best backpack armour. Targets tend to be smaller than average, so we've packaged this ammunition with our highest accuracy rifle for extra tight grouping. What's more, the trigger action is so smooth, spectators will think you're firing on full auto.
Given the large number of targets you will have available at your chosen location, we've included our largest quick-change magazines and a whopping 1000 rounds in easy access pouches.

The Mall Meat Slicer: Previous users failed to achieve all the kills available because they were unaware of targets in adjacent aisles. This package includes our indoor micro drone which sends its image into the corner of your telescopic sight. A laser dot from the drone linked to your sights shows you are on target. The days of prey escaping before you take the shot are over.

The Water Tower Wipeout Special: By the time you've climbed to your vantage point you're probably got sweat in your eyes, you've missed your meds so you're a bit shaky, and with the voices in your head going ten to the dozen, you need to make every round count. This package links our gyro stabilized sight to a hands-free tripod mounted weapon. The sight tracks the target and takes the shot as soon as lock-on is achieved. We expect to see our customers who buy this package to smash target tally records this year."

The NRA is out with a new ad tonight featuring new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, in which he says he opposes background checks and waiting periods to purchase firearms.

Johnson has God on his side. Here's part of his first email message to supporters as Speaker.

Note the photo at the top.

Something tells me it won't be "god's will" when he fails at that job and loses the slim house majority.

Then again,.maybe God did send him... As a warning.

What I love about the US is the separation of state and religion /sarcasm.

Can you imagine the outcry if this was a picture of a mosque?

I get some crazy as st emails from US politicians on both sides.

99% beg for money. However, in recent years, both Republicans & Democrats have begun to demonise eachother. There is no common ground.

Frankly, it's disturbing.

It appears to me that by turning the opponent into an enemy gets people riled up and more likely to donate. The side effect is aggression. This is only going to end one way. Thoughts and prayers ahoy...

That's how I read it the first time too, I had to go back and read it slowly a couple of times.

7 mass shootings in a day, is that a record?

It is weird though, bet if you asked most Americans what is the biggest threat to them, it would be something like Islamic terrorism, not Cleetus going postal at the mall, road safety, inequality in health provision, ropey diet, drugs or dangerous dogs.
