Meanwhile in the Philippines they are getting battered by a storm as dangerous if not considerably worse, yet we are worrying about a country that should really be able to look after itself. I find the whole media attention on this rather distasteful given what else is going on in the world. Sure it will not be that good in America but WTF! the media are ill.
Man's got a point! All in all, this was a low impact hurricane, just impacting an area that usually does not get them.
South New Jersey.
Well there wasn't the usual "duelling chainsaws" as is norm the day after a storm. People round here usually take on a Blitz mentality and look for people to help.
Not uncommon to see a father with a chainsaw and his son carrying a case of beer! Not the greatest combination
All fairly quite though, couple of roads closed and a few "puddles", damage seems to be branches not trees.
So basically it's excitement over, back to work Monday, then listen to the New York media rant on with phrases like "eye of the Hurricane over NY" until the next Celeb does something silly.
One thing I would say is the Administrations and Weather people did a very good job. Evacuations were very close to 100%, far fewer idiots saying "we'll ride it out". Possibly due to the shelters being "pet friendly", so the old lady with her cat was more willing to leave her house. The weather people were giving the street names of where tornados would hit, granted only 3 or 4 minutes notice, but impressive none the less.
The only neg comment came from my neighbour "why the frigging weekend, couldn't we have had this during the week"

We are in it's direct path and have been hit with high winds and rains for a few hours now - the eye is almost over us. To be honest it hasn't really been that impressive or scary - sure high winds and driving rains, but far from the picture of armageddon being painted on the news channels over here.
You'll be fine; check back with us when a cat. 3 pays a visit. Record flooding in Philly; New jersey seems to have taken the worst of it. On the whole, the targeted areas fared far better than they may have with a real hurricane. The damage total is in the billions, which is not too difficult in those areas.
ETA: Just saw a small upstate New York town, Prattsville, looking pretty much under water. No storm surge, purely rainfall.

Albany got a bit of a beating all day today. We lost power for a few hours at both the house and our restaurant. Very annoying as the Dunkin Donuts across the street had their power all day. Managed to drag the generator out of the shed and get it to the restaurant to save the food. The second I plug the fridge in to the generator the power came back on to everything. For a moment I thought I was an electrical genius.
Decided to stay in Albany another day as Hoboken NJ appears to have been battered. We heard our neighbors don't have power and they have been told to expect it to be at least a week to restore. I hope ours didnt go out There was a couple of feet if water outside our building which is normal for a decent storm as we are below Hudson river level and at the bottom of the hill.
Will probably return to NJ Monday but want to confirm we have power before we do.
Eta. We have power. Very relieved and will return home Monday

Hey hey hey In lounge at Edinburgh airport and it looks like we're off to Newark on schedule. They had the 2 Continental aircraft sitting on the tarmac here since Saturday and it looks like they'll fire them up for today's flights. I'm assuming it's going to be a bumpy ride at times so I'm working my way through the free bar. Let's hope we get there, and the connection to Vegas flies.

I really don't understand all the fuss. Hurricanes hit the east coast every year.
Not that far north, not since 1985 Marty.Fortunately there's been nothing as severe of late as the 1938 event - over 500 killed including 50 in NYC and nearly $5bn damage in today's money, then you bear in mind the development since then - all of which goes to show what an exceptional plank McKibben is with his recent pronouncements including placing the blame for Irene on Obama. I'm not BO's biggest fan but this aint down to him. Or anybody else!

Jimbeaux, have friends in Williamsburg VA who live almost on the water, but can't contact them. phones seem to be out. Can't seem to get any local website nor local gov websites with info. Any news from your end?
I believe Williamsburg is pretty much OK; the power and some phone service is impacted. I suspect by no later than Wednesday you should hear something. If not, email me specifics and I will try to look them up from my end.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
