We run a lot of SWA 3 x 95mmSq, 500m of that it 4.4 ton.
That's a good point, how in the wide, wide world of sports did no-one spot the 3.14keys cutting up a tonne of cable and handballing it into the inevitable rusty transit? I think it's reasonable to assume they didn't take it away in one lump, doing all that would take a while and make a bit of noise.hidetheelephants said:

They cut it out and hide it close by, when the repairs are made they come back and strip it.philthy said:
As much as I hate it, more regulation would help here.
Licence scrap dealers.
Record names, registrations, and photograph anyone who visits a scrap yard. Valid proof of ID, and address required.
ANPR camera on any scrap yard gate.
Paid by cheque/bank transfer.
Anything else?

I too work on the railway in the signalling department, it's getting beyond a joke now.
My friend works for national grid as a project manager. In the last 18-24 months they have had 2 cable thieves die. 1 tried to cut through a HV cable with bolt croppers, it blew both his arms off upto his elbows when he made contact with the conductor, he bled to death.
The second cut through a smaller cable which activated the fire protection system in the substation. It fills the room with a gas that starves the fire if oxygen, and also anyone inside the room.
I have no sympathy for them.
I was on a cable theft recently by a platform, whilst jointing the new length in the amount of commuters that asked us why it stops trains when cable is stolen was ridiculous.
You should try explaining to a member of the general public why every train has to stop at a black signal, it's like banging your head up against a brick wall. It just ends up looking like we (the signalling dept) are the bad guys!

I think there is an element of truth in the idea that spending one's whole time being ferried on public transport can render one blind to the dangers inherent in all forms of moving vehicles. That and trains are entitled to their fair share of general thickos.

At the end of the day to fix the problem will require stricter laws for the scrap dealers to work to.
No cash transactions.
If check is isssued by scrap dealer, has to be non-endorsable to the seller, as per their DL or ID.
Bearing in mind the ideas of the banks to reduce checks being used:
Bank transfer of funds from scrap dealer to seller. So no bank account, no sale.
Copy of driver's license or ID at point of sale.
All sales electronically controled buy standard (i.e all dealers use the same system)point-of-sale system.
If it needs to get that strict to stop the problem.

Seems like an ideal solution to me.
I was unfortunate enough to work with someone killed by 11KV many years ago. I always said I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
For these thieving b'stards, I will make an exception.
As for the price to replace that hospital cable, by the time you factor in the cost of a Cable gang, Civils (trenches etc) and then the actual cost of a cable thicker than Schwarzenegger's bicep, it starts to look reasonable.
