When you consider the tax savings, it may well be worth it

3. MASSIVE rise in fag duty
Thus encouraging more people to buy smuggled cigarettes, reducing the total tax revenue and increading the amount of money lost to the black economy.

Genius.
Duty has been going up year on year for decades now and so has the total revenue collected.

And tax revenue lost to smuggling has actually gone down over the past 10 years despite duty going up.

All based on government estimated figures.
They're not going to say anything else.
Having seen the price of smokes lately, I'd say we're well passed the point where if folks were going to go to black market ones, they'll already be there. I don't think many paying todays prices will suddenly snap at a moderate increase.

Maybe, I'm not a smoker, but I would be surprised. I'd say more likely to drive the urge to quit up.

I reckon for quite a few [ mainly overseas? ] buyers of multi-milliom pound properties.. the additional stamp duty isnt something to be concerned about [even if the Govt get tough with anti-avoidance].

A 7%+ transaction cost to acquire safe-haven-trophy assets in London .... big deal.

They will usually want immediate gratification .. self build is just too much hassle.
£2m doesn't exactly buy you a trophy asset in London (or much of the SE).

I agree it is worth it from a pure financial perspective.. just that for many ultra HNW's who can afford the tax .. they just couldnt be bothered.

[Going on what happens in the ultra HNW market in places like Cyprus.. where offers for +30% or more above market value are made for just-built $5m villas to motivate the local owner-occupier to sell up ... this is because the nouveau riches Ruski's cannot be arsed to buy a plot and build for lower cost ... it's a 1-2 year process ]

Nope, but its low enough to capture as much as possible and high enough that there will be no legitimate complaints about people being caught by it unfairly.

Price is way down on the list of reasons to quit for a smoker. Believe me I know. As an ex smoker I'd have cut back on other areas to be able to afford the smokes I needed. They know this and that's why that just keep increasing the duty.

People I know that still smoke have switched to roll ups or just keep paying the price for their favourite brand.

Yup, that's why I think it's not going to have a horrible tax take hit as predicted, I think we're passed that point. As I say, I may be wrong.

A moderate increase isn't being suggested, a MASSIVE increase is.

Gives me more resolve to carry on and fk the lot of em by finding a way to do it and pay no tax to this countries government.

Which I manage to do with no hassle at all.

Welfare bill consumes 1/3 of all public spending...

yikes

I knew it was a lot, but I didn't realise it was *that* far out of control!

You make your own fuel? Or you steal fuel from petrol stations, along with all taxable goods?

Nope, but if I could I would.

And it's not theft, it's perfectly legal.

That's lumping pensions, which is the largest budget area, in with other welfare benefits.

There won't be cuts in international aid - the Government are committed to the target of 0.7% of GNI.
