Jessops gone into administration...
Discussion
John Lewis has some very positive points that Jessops does not.
It is run for the good of its staff alone so no shareholders/hedge fund and it isn't overloaded with debt.
It doesn't rely on a single vertical to generate profits
It has relatively few outlets and an Internet presence
It has a very loyal and affluent following
Combine those and you can see why it won't be disappearing anytime soon unless they put a complete buffoon in charge.

The day JL announce losses will be the end of retail as we know it.
Indeed. Along with the day DFS don't have a sale on, and when WHSmiths don't offer a chocolate bar when buying a newspaper.Jessops have, like Comet, been a candidate for collapse for some years. I am old enough to remember the boom days of Jessops and the like in the pre internet retail world when specialist shops could (and did) command premium prices.
Not any more. Retailing and indeed the whole shopping approach is changing as the net market bites into easily transported product supply. Different times mean different trading styles. Difficult to predict the longer term consequences.
But certainly easily delivered product will be priced out of the High Street and probably out of retailing in any shop with the huge cost of overheads. Parking charges will continue to rise and shop retailing will continue to fall.
Equally the newspaper industry will be decimated. The very success of the likes of PH and the likes of the 20p I paper, shows where the newspaper industry fears their market is going.
I bought a wifi sd card from them on Saturday in the Trafford centre. Paid 40 knowing I could have got the same thing from amazon for 27 but I wanted to ask questions about its capabilities !
I told him what I wanted in the sd card and he assured me it could deliver!
Got it home and discovered he was talking out of his hat.
90% of the staff in the shop are just to#€$ing it off as a job with little or no product knowledge!
Took it back without any fuss, thank god I did it sooner than later

I wonder how much the govt felt they were "losing" with the LVCR loophole.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-2095...

JL are awesome. Not always the cheapest, but excellent value and good service.
Ever tried to get them to fulfil their "price promise"...?Despite about 20 attempts, on everything from toys to electricals to homeware, I've handed in receipts, printed web pages, reservations details, shown web pages on an iPhone and they have NEVER price matched...
Well that'll certainly learn 'em.

SD card £49.95 in Jessops/PC World
Amazon, same thing, same brand, brand new, unopened £17.00 inc free postage.
I like to support shops but.........
Costco have 32Gb Sandisk Extreme for £24 , at Jessops down the road from Costco, about £60-70 for the same thing. I guess they didn't sell many at that price. When ever I went in to a Jessops I'd often get bum advice based on what they had in stock and wanted to sell. Ask about a 24p capable camera and they try and flog some other thing thats not even close.Amazon, same thing, same brand, brand new, unopened £17.00 inc free postage.

A huge pity, and strange in a way.
Photography has boomed in recent times because it is so accessible, the products may have changed, the mix of products may have changed but the total value of product has increased immensely.
With a brand name that is as well recognised as Jessops I am astounded they couldn't make money.

Considering the death of 35mm and associated revenue streams, and the emergence of the smartphone, I'd love to know what has driven an increase in value in the UK photography market recently. In fact, I imagine so would Jessops.Photography has boomed in recent times because it is so accessible, the products may have changed, the mix of products may have changed but the total value of product has increased immensely.
