Strange light here in Cheshire, the sun is more of an orange colour than it shows in the photo. Slight wind.
Just about to post the same - very weird light with heavy cloud here on the welsh borders. A bit like it get's when there's a partial eclipse

In Swansea,

Strange yellow light quite calm actually and warm but with thick cloud cover.
Sun broke through at 10:00 and we've got blue skies atm.

Spooky sky colour here in Bristol, plus cars are covered in yellow dust/sand.
Was going to mention the sand, my car was covered !

Loving the green sky at the moment, Bristol actually looks quite good biggrin

Same down here near Tiverton in Devon.

Wind picked up markedly in the past 20 minutes, went outside to secure a car-cover that has blown loose, and took a photo of the same sun effect....and was then confronted by a swarm of angry wasps, not sure where they've emerged from but they're really, really grumpy.

If you look at this site and set the overlay to particulates - you can see that as the hurricane passed the west coast of Africa - it appears to have picked up some Saharan sand on the way.

Currently in Galway its a bit Gray, a bit windy, and a bit wet......so pretty normal for this time of year.

Wife got back from Galway city and hour ago and there are riot vans out with loud hailers (sp?) Telling everyone to go home. A worker in the next unit to us said that the Gaurds are down at Salthill promenade warning people not to hang around (apparently watching the st9rm come in and waiting to take pictures of it)

Michael fish was on the BBC earlier... he said that there wouldn’t be a hurricane, just high winds and rain.. why wouldn’t you believe him..?
He was right. It wasn't a hurricane 30 years ago and it isn't a hurricane today.

30 years ago it was a sting jet that caused the damage. Radar imagery shows a sting jet is highly likely today:

https://twitter.com/MattHugo81/status/919813302036...
The big issue Michael Fish had was that a warning of severe weather and damage had come from French forecasters hours before anything happened in the UK, and he downplayed it significantly. He only references 'some woman called in' but he didn't take into account warnings from other professional sources. Yes the term Hurricane was used and that was incorrect, but the weather forecast that he gave at 10pm totally dissed and downplayed the warnings that had been given by other forecasters. He cant claim to have been 'right' about the lack of a Hurricane when what we saw that night was massive destruction and the loss lives that he had not forecast despite warnings from other sources. He didn't just ignore them, he specifically said they were incorrect and that we'd only get some rain...... and that it would be very windy, but that would be in Spain and northern France

French weather forecasters correctly assessed the impact 18 hours before the storm hit. If they could do it, why couldn't British forecasters? They specifically said that the southern UK would be hit be severe winds. France actually suffered more damage than the UK did, but at least they forecast the trouble.

Fish has made various excuses for what he said in the forecast, from claiming that he wasn't even talking about UK weather when referencing this 'Hurricane', claiming there was in fact no call from 'some woman', and also contradicting his claims over time. He would have been better to stand up and say they got it wrong due to factors such as cutbacks and lack of investment.

Just outside Belfast atm and winds have most certainly picked up in the pat half hour. Birds were flying about confused as I was out weighting stuff down. Wouldn't be surprised to see some damage coming.

The pressure dropped 30hPa in the ~8 hours before it stopped recording. Impressive.

People reported to be swimming in the sea off Galway and two kite surfers have been rescued by Clogher Head lifeboat (Co. Louth).

People are just mad.

RTE just interviewed a surfer who had just parked his camper van on a beach. They asked him if he was planning on riding some waves. He said "No, I'm just watching".

I bet he's feeling tempted though.

The buoy south of Ireland has had hurricane force winds ( you can have them without it being a hurricane of course).

Will be interesting to see how it progresses northwards and what they get in the Scottish isles.

Looking at the weather maps it looks like the east coast of Ireland and the west coast of England will get a battering along the Irish Sea. Everywhere else will be windy but not significant. I know it could change but I'm just sceptical of the hype.

It's very strange out here in Cumbria, between 9:30am and 11am it was as dark as dusk. Not a single breeze though, every tree branch was still.

Wind picked up ever so slightly and the same orange sunset even though it's high in the sky.

Well I'm scheduled to go sailing this afternoon which could be exciting. It's now practically dark and the sky is dark yellow here (Dorset) but the wind isn't anything to write home about yet.
