"The people of Gibraltar won't be bullied now or after the 29th of march. Incidents like this, however, are a useful reminder of why we will never agree to be Spanish."

no point in having it.

Just a rock people get passionate about. Just like the Falklands.

If that's the case why are the Spanish constantly being cocks about it?

Anyway, both are strategically significant and both are home to populations that staunchly wish to be British.

Not...exactly. It's a major listening station. It's an important refuelling stop for ships. It's a useful runway. It has a commanding position over the Straits, through which every ship into or out of the Med must pass unless they want to go through Suez which is pretty damn obvious.

We had HK Island in perpetuity, having a lease on the rest was the problem

Or as stated previously, if Britain doesnt want it, it shouldnt go to the a governing entity called the people of Gibraltar, it goes to Spain

Here's the problem
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar
In 1713 Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain
Spain kept a claim on it that if Britain didnt want it they get first dibs
Sounds fair enough

Fast forward to 2006 when a new constitution was put in place giving Gibraltar some powers of self government and Britain using terms like 'whatever the people of Gibraltar want'
This was never part of the agreement, hence since 2006 Spain has been very tetchy about something that was outside 1713 treaty
Interesting, thanks.

The fly in the Spanish ointment is that Britain does want it & has simply allowed Gib some input to local affairs.

The water supply and power supply to the island was something of an issue too...

Not forgetting its a naval dockyard able to take nuclear subs. It's also the only place in the world that sells "chicken on a fist", which is reason enough to remain British.

Suspected this might be something like "punching a donkey"..............

Wooooowhooooaaaa! Didn't get a hit with Google but followed a link to an RN forum which then gave a name of a lady involved so went onto an art movie site IIIII think could be eXXXplicite and searched said phrase. I can only hope the chicken was dead before the event. And after one had done the deed why did four more have to! Wasn't there a saying it is only kinky the first time but a five times fisted chicken, blurgh.

Though Miss RN Gib 2009 has quite some skills.

Definitely seen something that could never be un-seen tonight and for that sole reason we should retain Gib. And so we can dock whichever nuc sub we crash next as we seem to be quite astute at hitting things with them these days.

Why does everybody immediately default to war based reasons for keeping Gibraltar? The financial services / gambling side of things are pretty vital to all of us as it keeps some prices down with the tax efficiency. Watching the banks steadily drip feed their operations abroad from the City is bad enough, but losing that too would be very painful indeed.

Could always move the Financial stuff to the isle of white (that’s offshore) or maybe Scotland after they vote for independence that way Gibraltar could be released to Spain......

Nothing deviant about "Chicken on a fist' smile

Its exactly as it sounds. Whole cooked chicken served over a tinfoil covered fist (preferably your own).

Perfect for eating on the way back to your ship. Difficult to drop and no packaging to litter the place.
