If this thread is any indication of how this election is going to go I think I’ll sit this one out. The tone is terrible.

What sort of tone would you prefer?

Hm. The last couple of pages would suggest something infinitely less snarky. If you want to reproduce the election vibe in thread feel free. As I say I’ll skip.

This tweet reports the Conservatives still need to find candidates in almost 100 seats. What a shambles.

Well, if it helps even out the tone I'm cautiously optimistic that Labour will actually be a distinct improvement. I think Starmer is a competent and diligent individual and I think they're running on a strong message, and I believe they'll have a strong mandate also. I look forwards to being able to be proud of the UK on the international stage again, and I desperately want politics to go back to the boring business of delivering as much as possible to as many as possible. I'm much more lib dem than labour but I honestly believe a dose of Starmer and his reformed labour party is what's best for the UK right now.

I'm genuinely looking forwards to it. I think it'll be a giant leap forwards for us all after a decade of turmoil.

A montage of Portillo moments in the early hours of the 5th is just the cherry on top.

A 'dose of Starmer', it does have a ring to it.

If you could link me up with your dealer id appreciate that, as it sounds like he's selling some proper stuff.

This is pretty much aligned with my own position.

Starmer gets a lot of stick from all directions, which I have often found a bit odd. We need somebody competent to lead the country, not a "comic" raconteur or an odd man leading a barely functioning government, who has defended a stupid diversionary policy of spending huge sums in not-sending people to Rwanda and who always sounds as if he is reading a story to a nursery class.

Wes Streeting was on R4 earlier. He comes across very well. Good luck to Labour.

Well I'd rather have my frame of mind than doom and gloom fear mongering, over nothing. God knows we've been through enough st under the Tories. There's room for a bit of hope.

And I'm not delusional. I think there's plenty of scope for competent politics and competent politicians to deliver better outcomes for most of the UK. Surely we've not all been so ground down that we've lost all hope for this fine nation?

To be fair I believe upwards of 80 odd tories have quit in the last few months believing their seat is a goner. Selection processes are ongoing.
It does underline however a complete breakdown in terms of planning between CCHQ and the local party associations. Unless Sunak has factored in that 80-100 odd to his likely outcome. Hung parliament territory.

It just seems that the more the prospect of an Imminent Labour landslide becomes clear, the nastier the Tory-supporting minority on here are becoming

Time to ignore this thread, at least for me

They are small in number and sound increasingly silly.

It really does sound like it was an utter surprise to the Tories and the story that letters were going in to oust Sunak so he said ‘fk you, election time’ might be true.

Labour have even more I believe, but Danny Finkelstein and Peter Mandelson both agreed that it will actually help the leaders because in this scenario party HQ takes over the process and will appoint the people they like, which usually gives a higher standard of candidate.

Labour have to find 86 too. Including deciding on Diane Abbott after a year of no action.

What would be the ultimate Portillo moment for you? I’m thinking JRM, Braverman or (bit left field) Raaaaab.
