On my usual walk today I noticed almost all the hairdressers were closed. The Mrs tells me that closing on a Monday is normal around these here parts.
So if there's all this pent-up demand for having your hair cut, surely after 3 months of being closed, these places would break their habits and open on Mondays for at least a while ? Maybe the media has overdone the mass hair cut demand ?
My barber is booking only. I had to book more than 2 weeks ahead. They are closed today. So if there's all this pent-up demand for having your hair cut, surely after 3 months of being closed, these places would break their habits and open on Mondays for at least a while ? My favourite cafe is big enough to reopen. They seem to be doing a halfhearted takeaway service on random days.
I haven't ventured into our nearest city yet, but plan to later this week. More out of morbid curiosity than anything else.
It's like everyone is reluctant to reopen. Too much government support perhaps?

It could be that. It still seems crazy that barbers that have been allowed to open for the first time in months do so for two days and then close again just because it's Monday!
If it's like many other areas, they worked all Saturday and Sunday. No wonder they need a day off today.Robertj21a said:

People are just struggling to get back into "work mode". All my clients are taking forever to do simple things for no easily explained reason beyond not being used to work after nearly 4 months off.

I suppose so. We don't seem to get that around here - they all open 7 days a week, but they are mainly 'rent-a-chair' type places so each barber probably has some time off each week.Saweep said:

I think a lot of them would have been absolutely manic all weekend so perhaps just need a bit of a break? So if there's all this pent-up demand for having your hair cut, surely after 3 months of being closed, these places would break their habits and open on Mondays for at least a while ? You lot should be glad to be in England in wales we are still restricted only today the 5 mile rule/guidline/made up random s
t is over but we still must stay local. Pubs etc still not open you cant view a house if someone lives in it.
Yet our saviour drakeford is keeping us safe over the nasty tories and boris is the repeated line by some in wales even though cases or low and deaths have been single figures for the last month in fact today had zero.
Wonder how long it will take for the economic hit to wales is felt to those types of people.

Reminds me of a new business start-up in my local town. Big razzamatazz opening on a Friday morning, lots of interest. Same on Saturday. After the weekend, a sign on the door. 'Closed Mondays'. This is a brand new business . Obviously not serious about providing a service or making a few bob.
Some place in Chester opened a few years ago. It was a cafe/takeaway doing yogurt mainly . It looked like the sort of place those that wanted that type of thing would stop at for breakfast. What were their opening hours ? Opened at around 11, closed at say 8 in the evening. So the missed the breakfast business and I can't believe people coming out of a pub in the evening would be tempted by a yogurt, It was as if their opening hours were to suit them and not their customers. It lasted about a year. snuffy said:

Pretty much all of the ones near where I work were open today. Mind you I'm not entirely convinced that many of them aren't just barbers in name, if you know what I mean.So if there's all this pent-up demand for having your hair cut, surely after 3 months of being closed, these places would break their habits and open on Mondays for at least a while ? Many other businesses that have had no drop in footfall have still cut opening hours.
Why are business not even trying to make money at the moment?

Our local pub is closed Tuesday and Wednesday at the moment. It is very quiet on those days apart from Tuesday pool league and Wednesday pub quiz. Since neither of those are taking place at the moment they've decided it's not worth opening as it wouldn't cover the cost of paying the bar staff. Many other businesses that have had no drop in footfall have still cut opening hours.

I think people are waiting to see what happens to new infection numbers following the easing of restrictions. That will take time.
If there's no big increase then people will return to normal. If there is then retail and pubs are stuffed.

BBC News has just announced that 3 pubs across the country that had reopened have now had to close after a customer tested positive for the virus.
That does appear to be their own chosen action though rather than Government diktat. It would be wholly irresponsible on the part of the businesses involved to remain open when the positive result of a customer for CV19 has potentially exposed both their staff and clientele to the same virus.
Did they need to be told what to do by a Govt diktat, and then only close their business and act in a responsible manner?
If your business suffered similarly would you shut up shop, or wait until told to do so by a Govt diktat?
