Time to ignore this thread, at least for me
Did you mean to post a link to the forum index? Or were you so outraged that you cocked it up?

What would be the ultimate Portillo moment for you? I’m thinking JRM, Braverman or (bit left field) Raaaaab.
See two posts above for my top candidate!! Tbh I'm still working out the list. Quite a few aren't MP's any more or aren't standing again.

Another 5 have announced today that they are quitting. Makes 72. Will break the record at this rate (seems appropriate as they have broken everything else!).

If / When they lose in an election, do they still get the 'parachute payment' of a few grand to help them after they've lost their job? What if they quit?

I’ve always been quite surprised at the number of MPs who appeared to want/enjoy a long “career” in Parliament. I have always looked on it as something I could do for a term or two, but then need to get out. The whole deal of being an MP, the lifestyle, the pay, who you have to deal with, etc etc would drive me utterly potty.
As to the tone of the election, esp on here, I actually consider it precisely the opposite of a previous poster. The closer we get to the end point, the nastier the posts, attitude & tone gets from the aggressively anti-Tory posters.
I’m not a doom n gloom merchant though. I don’t think the country is irredeemably broken, in complete chaos or on the verge of collapse. I think the place largely works, is a decent place to live and that the future looks reasonably ok no matter who gets in. There will be some relatively minor tinkering if Labour wins, but not much will actually change because SKS simply isn’t that kind of bloke. I don’t think Corbyn will suddenly reappear, I don’t think Angie will mount a coup and take is into communism or Dianne tasked with overhauling the Maths GCSE exam.

Six weeks to prepare for Labour government armageddon.

As I can't run off to sunnier climes, what to do?

Buy loo rolls.
Buy loo rolls.
Access all tax free cash from pension scheme.
Convert all cash savings to bitcoin.
Limit salary/pension to basic rate tax threshold.
Don't privately educate children.
Buy bottled water.

Anything else? tongue out

Oh, and buy loo rolls.

Apparently this allows CHQ to impose candidates on the local parties and a number are claiming this is one of the reasons for the surprise announcement.

Of course if none of the candidates imposed are elected then it will not have much effect on the long term future of the party......

The tax free cash part I have done . I concluded it about a month ago in anticipation of the next government. It can take a few weeks so get on with it if you are going to do so . The recent inflation figures do not help investment rates when you go to invest it , but unless they make changes retrospectively , I think getting it out may be a smart move .

Good post, and I agree with you. There's a lot of catastrophisation going on but, whatever the outcome, the world won't end.

Also Labour, so the hard left won't have the 15% of the votes to impose a candidate. It could backfire if this was the thinking.

With a very significant majority I do wonder if the schisms in the Labour Party will become more open within a couple of years. If I were Ms Rayner and ambitious, I’d be on manoeuvres pretty early on.

I think it captures the mood very well. Most people have had enough of the Tories, and all pro-Tory posters have left is to play the victims.

To be entirely fair to Deej he does have a point that it's clearly only the posters who have had enough of this lot who are the problem.

The Starmer and Rayner and (mostly deleted due to the filth in them) Abbott threads clearly set the gold standard in respectful and dignified posts, attitude & tone.

Kwarteng sounded far too reasonable in that interview, but also not as capable as he pretended to be when promoting Brexit or being Truss' chancellor. The question is why did he go along with Mad Liz Truss?

That's my take also.

I suspect Starmer is essentially just the acceptable face of the party and a useful idiot at this point. Once they gain power all bets are off and the loony "comrade" lot who've been kept quite for a while will have a lot more to say for themselves.

The economy, NHS etc. are completely fked in reality, so all they can realistically achieve is to mess about with cultural stuff, which suits them down to the ground.
