"Sunak’s Eat Out to Help Out drove second Covid wave, Vallance tells inquiry"

Much as I am no fan of most of Sunak's recent moves the claim by Vallance is b*llox in my opinion and ignores similar second waves throughout the western world. All part of a pretence to claim infection was within the control of government and all we needed to do was lock down harder, longer, faster.
Surely as a scientist, Vallance would agree the best possible time to have a second wave would be August. Build up that previous infection protection for the upcoming winter? For another thread, perhaps hehe

Back on topic. Rishi cutting taxes...wouldn't that be inflationary? Not that I'm against having a few extra quid in my pocket but he's spent most of the year trying various ingenious ways of removing the same, to dampen inflation

confused

Oh and I see it's a promise again, rather than a hope, now the target has been hit. Well, Rishis "easy" target of halving the ten percent inflation of earlier in the year (which was always going to fall naturally , to a greater or lesser extent). Still some way off the BoE target if 2%

Yes.

all this talk of "tax cuts" (which will give back a little of what has been taken) and what is really needed is the routine raising of tax allowances in line with inflation.

Well they are certainly keen to blame others.
The timeline iirc had Eat Out around July 2020 while schools reopened June - September 2020 with a new variant December 2020.

With so many variables impacting on transmission around that time, Vallance needs to spell out which fag packet modelling provides such certainty.

I really can't remember but wasn't this around the time the virus had an inbuilt height catchment area. Or was it more catchable after a certain time.

The virus had many interesting qualities. Like how it could be stopped dead by a fabric mask with a pretty pattern off Etsy, or warded off by a Scotch egg. For some reason six was a number pleasing to it as well.

How is the Covid pandemic not pertinent to a discussion of Rishi Sunak? He was Chancellor at the time, a position to which he rose from out of (pretty much) nowhere. It's quite a big part of his political story.

Discussing his actions is fair game. There is a dedicated thread to discus the virus.

The pandemic, yes it's quite relevant... Conspiracy theories are not.

They are not going to do that, they need to target floating voters so moving the bands from the bottom helps everyone.

Agreed something close to the above would definitely help but I don't think they'll do it to that level.

What they should look at is the Higher Income Child Benefit Charge it's a sneaky tax that normal PAYE wouldn't be aware of then get hit by.

...which is why he won't do it: no 'wedge' value in a tax cut that will be universally welcomed. He'll opt for something that Labour would have to promise to reverse.

Maybe a bit. But in general, the Covid waves were in sync around the world. So it was insignificant really.

Sneaky taxation is the Tory MO.

They like to claim they're lowering taxes but really are hitting you by raising things like insurance premium tax, air passenger duties, import duties, et al.
