However, the fundamental problem is that our political system has became a soap opera, fuelled by the need to feed the 24-hour news cycle. Where is the (genuine) discussion about the best long term policies, evaluating the inevitable trade-offs, which will make our society more healthy, more happy and more wealthy over the coming decades? Instead the focus is on trivial tit-bits like this thread. And not just this thread, there are plenty of people more interested in clutching their pearls over total irrelevances in the Rishi Sunak (etc etc) threads too.
But is it a fundamental problem or simply a reflection of today's society and is what 'the people' want? If people really wanted discussion (genuine or otherwise) of policies and trade-offs, they would....er...actually be concerned about those things and elect people who reflected that desire rather than concentrate on petty point scoring on the 'other' side while self righteously expressing how virtuous they are compared to the 'bad' people who didn't agree with them..... The saying that we get the politicians we deserve rings pretty true tbh.

I've probably said enough about AR already, but on the principle of MPs disclosing tax returns etc why the heck not.
There was another MP on the radio the other day refusing to talk about whether they would accept the latest MP payrise "it's private".

It's not. Its my money. There's an (inadequate) register of members interests.

If an MP (yes probably on average applies to more Tories than labour) has irregular / contrived tax arrangements we should be told.
Who else's tax returns do you want to see? Civil service? Soldiers? Nurses? Doctors?

What do we gain from tax returns that we don't reasonably know from MPs declaring their interests?

This thread is all about events that occurred before this person was an MP...

Yes, I suppose I agree; the "24 news cycle" etc is just giving people what they want. Hence that itself should also be considered a symptom and not the cause.

Again, that's the deflection, the real issue is whether this person who might be deputy PM in less than 9 months is lying or not in the here and now.

And that would be a new thing for a politician?

And we're talking about publishing tax returns for MPs at this moment. Keep up at the back.

Would she really do time for this though?

Seems a bit excessive imo however much I don’t particularly like her.

I won't be disappointed if this is the death knell for her, she's a bit too far left for me.

That said it feels like it's being blown a bit out of proportion.

The Tories will be thanking their lucky stars that there's something other than Tory doom and gloom in the political news.

That was quite funny in itself.

All that matters is whether she's been telling lies for the last 6-8 weeks.

I saw that comment, it's quite astounding in and of itself, but also because if that is genuinely Lammy's belief that would mean that Rayner would simply have to resign the day after the election rather than now.

It would indeed be an issue, and Lammy's excusery is risible nonsense. Only to be expected, though.

The left are only held accountable to the left… somewhat.. where’s Keir in this, after all, with terrorists and pedos under his wing previously, a bit of electoral fraud should be a walk in the park in PMQT.
