{{{The masters of the universe, it turns out, are losers.
Indeed.

People are people.

Having met quite a few people (mostly male) like this whilst growing up (and being discriminated against in sport due to being from a state school) and particularly at an "old" university, where there was often a distinct social divide, I quickly realised that background, confidence and contacts made a very big difference -moreso than ability.

There are some very impressive, sharp, insightful, creative, achieving people out there, and I find such people fascinating to talk to and learn from (and they are often the sort of people who are keen to learn too), but they are not necessarily the people who find themselves at the very top -or seek those positions.

Kavanaugh came across as almost the worst kind of "successful" man. Trump, er, trumps, him.

Brilliant.

Yep, I wondered about that constant snorting was all about.

SNL has had some fantastic sketches since Trump came to power

It feels like cheating though using such ridiculous source material hehe

'He's got some front' we used to say when someone was bluffing particularly close to the edge, and rather like the Wild West towns of Hollywood, a 'front' is all it is. There is little of substance behind it, no great insights and worse, no real and genuine intention to better society - all of society - but just themselves and their peers. They play a game, but to us mortal sheep it can be life and death, not a game. Would you be judged by this man? Is this man now going to tell women what they can and can't do with their own bodies, [just more at a distance this time]? Does this man, appealing to God, not really just intend to appeal to the sentiment of blind God-lovers? Does this man even respect his own family, lying and invoking them to use them as a cloak of respectability while double-talking?

I've said it often - 'humbug circus performers pretending to be big wizards', and when the small dog pulls back the curtain to reveal it, it's a shock to the people who were in awe of his magnificence, such a shock that most will not see it but would prefer to blink and carry on eating the grass.

It's a cliché to say anyone that wants to be a politician shouldn't be allowed to be a politician, but a cliché embedded in the fundamental truth. We have no Platonic philosopher-kings, just selfish and foolish people behind a façade we give them. Look at our own country, look at our political class, look how they deal with difficulty and impending forced change - with wisdom, innovation, determination, putting aside differences for the good of all? No. Just self interest. 'We'll be OK, we're innovators, we'll find exciting new ways, we'll be cunning and out manoeuvre those stupid bureaucrats'. Just talk. From stupid bureaucrats themselves. And we put them there. And they laugh.

The line between the news and the satire is now very indistinct. The satire is often almost virtually indistinguishable.

I do wonder whether the current Trump (and Brexit) era will have a lasting effect. Maybe there will be a change for the better as a reaction to the "revelation" that some of the bullying, entitled or wealthy men are being shown up for what they are? Not great, wise, visionaries after all.

Maybe there won't. The masses like to be led, and the UK working classes seem keen to led by men with posh voices (other than Cameron).

Another well written piece
https://www.currentaffairs.org/2018/09/how-we-know...

"If both parties speak with passion and clarity, but one of them says many inconsistent, evasive, irrational, and false things, while the other does not, then we actually have a very good indicator of which party is telling the truth. If a man claims to be innocent, but does things—like carefully manipulate words to avoid giving clear answers, or lie about the evidence—that you probably wouldn’t do if you were innocent, then testimony alone can substantially change our confidence in who to believe.

In this case, when we examine the testimony of Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford honestly, impartially, and carefully, it is impossible to escape the following conclusions:

Brett Kavanaugh is lying.
There is no good reason to believe that Christine Blasey Ford is lying. This does not mean that she is definitely telling the truth, but that there is nothing in what Kavanaugh said that in any way discredits her account."

There's then a good dismantling on Kavanaughs argument, similar to the Washington Post piece

once, satire was based on politics/life
Now, it's politics based on satire.

That fits with what this says, particularly, #3 Tell the truth, misleadingly, #8: Turn up the pressure, #9: Counterattack, #10: Bargain.

Not sure what you’re trying to stir up - I presume it’s to do with Matt Damon?
Perhaps when you’ve provided your insight you could provide it on the double figure amount of sexual assault allegations against the present potus.

The tactic is to list every other individual's alleged misdemeanours as a means of defending "their man".

It's a rather pathetic line of debate and best ignored.

I've seen bits of the statements/testimony and honestly I'm appalled at how the US system seems to work and just how partisan the whole business is.

It's possible either or both are lying and it's possible either or both are telling the truth to the best of their knowledge.

What's disturbing is that it seems that it's literally as simple as if you support Trump then Kavannagh must be telling the truth and Ford must be lying and if you don't support Trump then Kavannagh must be lying and Ford must be telling the truth.

I honestly can't remember ever watching such a stshow that was so clearly along party lines rather than any notion of right/wrong or caring about the truth.

The whole thing seems a stain on the US and makes our politics (which are pretty messed up in different ways) seem quite civilised.
