Handling may not have been to Bruce Grobbelaar standards but a target is a target not a promise.
The problem was that was not clear at the time. So why say it? Anyway it was a said time for spinning something but we are getting there now 2 weeks later.
They were quite clear that a target had been set for manufacturers to provide that number. ‘Target’ was specifically used.
yes

For those of us in the medical world who saw the footage from Chinese AE departments in Jan/Feb it was pretty predictable who was going to happen - the Germans acted earlier and quicker, more decisively, particularly in terms of involving the private sector such as big pharma etc PPE kit.

On top of that, they have mire ITU beds, doctors and hospital beds per capita than virtually anywhere else in the world.
Did they not shut down earlier? This may or may not have been a good thing depending on what happens in the future...
Not sure I follow - are you saying it could be a bad thing?
Yes
Yeah I though that was what you meant, but I couldn't quite believe it.

Crazy to think that getting a handle on a pandemic nice and early can be a bad thing.
Ah you are one of those nutters who thinks kicking the can down the road is the answer to everything. This virus isn't going anywhere. How long will Germany stay in lockdown? or more to the point what will happen when they lift the restrictions?
Considering it's a worldwide crisis and many clever people across the globe are working hard for a solution, it is surely better to have a good handle on it to begin with while you plot your way through a global disaster.

I mean, do you really think Germany are just kicking the can down the road and will open the gates in a few weeks time as if nothing has ever happened? Is that what you think?

You may think I'm a nutter, I'm not fussed either way. I think what Germany is doing is logical. Will it turn out ok - not a question I'm fit to answer, but I like how they've started.

Whats the point on setting an unattainable 'target'. Anyway either way they come away clean, if they don't test enough or do.

A daughter of a friend is a doctor specialising in infectious diseases.
Last year she gave me a book that I highly recommend it's called " Spillover " by David Quammen.
It's a very good read that tells you all you need to know about pandemics.

Another little personal anecdotal update if that's ok:

For the 2nd day now wife's hospital has been relatively under control and not struggling to find places for patients as they were last week......................as stated before this could just be the lull before the storm and she thinks hers is a bit in front of most other areas so fingers X'd this is the peak and soon things start to ease everywhere else.
Do we have the same wife? hehe

She’s busy but not mega.

Wonder when we find out how long the lockdown will be extended?

"One of those nutters" LOL. Yes 99% of government heath advisors are crazy, you are the sane one!

The way I see it, objectivity is very sensitive to threats to personal liberty. Tell people they can't do something, and all bets are off re rational assessment of a situation.

Chris Whitty is back - thank fk. He’s the voice of reason, non political and I trust him.
Him and The other medical/science ones are all good and informative, they must dread the questions though, from political reporters.

Kuunesberg and Peston seem to be the worst, not actually asking anything constructive but trying to find weakness among the government, how is that going to help?
Why are the HoP lobby fodder even there? This is fundamentally a public health crisis, it should be correspondents who have have a fking clue about science/medicine and aren't going to ask fkwit questions.

How do you know it's unattainable ?

I think they've probably got another couple of 3 week extensions to go at yet before they are going to start having real problems with compliance. Not sure what they will do after that....

We're essentially trapped in a room with a big savage dog and we've managed to get it pinned down. We're currently weighing up how likely it is that we'll have time to let go and run to the door before the dog rips our throat out.

It's certainly a difficult plaster to rip off...

A Chinook just flew over my house in the Chilterns - near Chequers. No idea of the significance as it was passing to the south east.

Why are their figures suddenly so horrendous? There was a lot of stuff about missed data last week.

Once this is all over it will be fascinating to find out why this virus affects some more than others. So far we know all these have a disproportionate risk:

Male
Over 50
BMI over 25
Underlying health conditions

And there are now reports that African Americans are at greater risk as well. As someone who has ticks all the first four boxes it is quite worrying.

Well they banned outdoor sports today in Paris during the hours of 10am-7pm so are the French not distancing enough?

Sure about that BMI? Thought it was obese only? Which is far higher.

I'm:

Male
Over 50 (51)
BMI 23 (pure muscle, not fat hehe )
No underlying health conditions (last check up 4 months ago)

Not 100% sure but it does seem as though they are only counting the deaths in hospital owing to CV19, and not including the deaths in homes etc, which of course might, or might not be down to CV19.
