Making Tax Digital

Thought I'd have a look at the VAT APIs. Didn't take long at all to knock together something to hit the sandbox, so I submitted an application for production creds. They denied it because I haven't spoken to their software development support team and demo'd it to their digital relationship management team.
Yuck.
They won't to make sure you are doing it right It is a bit of an odd ball process as they not only want to check the software out they also want to check the company behind it. I haven't a clue if they would accept an application from an individual who wanted to release a freeware solution but I get the impression they would not be happy.Yuck.
Not a MTD direct issue, but nevertheless more annoyance from HMRC for me.
Can't log on to their agent services until Tuesday due to 'planned maintenance'.
I mean, it's only month end, where not much happens....
Of my top ten job list to get sorted this weekend, the most important bits will now have to wait... and HMRC expect the country to be using their online services in the near future.... No chance!

Things are starting to hot up, I did my VAT return the other day and it said the next one would need to be done under MTD.
Also now started receiving emails from HMRC inviting me to seminars about it. But I can't see any simple summaries about MTD anywhere from them. It's only what I've read here and in other accountancy news that has really let me know about it.
I see that there are quite a lot of Excel based submission solutions now if you google. Even the big accountants are at it.
https://www.pwc.co.uk/ux23/products-and-services/p...
I find that one quite interesting. Firstly why are the giant that is PWC bothering to try to sell something for as little as £90, hardly worth collecting for them is it? If they are hoping it will lead to lots of business leads, I doubt it, since companies that are small enough to be using Excel for their books probably don't have the funds or patience to deal with PWC.
Secondly why are HMRC allowing these excel bodges now, surely by effectively letting you put any old numbers in, the whole reason for MTD is blown away.
Thirdly even when HMRC have allowed one of these bodges, I thought it was only supposed to be for one year, bridging a gap? So why are PWC selling it as a three year deal?

I'm surprised they don't realise that people are busy running a business instead.kev1974 said:

Since when did it have to make sense?kev1974 said:

Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by stupidity- but don't rule out malice either. You can still submit VAT returns using excel records as long as you have bridging software. That has always been the intention and isn't a "bodge" as you call it.
The larger players are offering this solution as many of their clients need an excel based process due to the complexity of their returns.

Really? I've spent the last two years hearing / reading "you won't be allowed to use excel any more". What a mess this is.The larger players are offering this solution as many of their clients need an excel based process due to the complexity of their returns.
I'm still searching for someone to release a free tool/app which effectively replicates the existing online input screen. I found a couple of close contenders but they are being provisioned with strings attached.
I've just done this quarters VAT return (0 value as I've not worked since August last year) so I don't have to worry about it until sometime in May, hopefully something will have turned up by then.
P.S. I calculate my VAT based in a spreadsheet I keep that indentifies my business bank account activity for my accountant to use at year end. I add up my invoices in the quarter and then pay 16.5% flat rate. For me to start using any kind of accounting app/software is total overkill, I just want a little app/excel add-on that will dump my 2 quarterly numbers (total invoice & VAT due) into HMRC's system.
ETA: I suspect there are many thousands the same as me.

But you may not get "free" software to do this. We are buying in our solution from a third party provider.

I wouldn't mind paying a few quid for an app, but I'm NOT interested in engaging with a "third party provider". I have neither the time bandwidth or the money to start paying someone else to do a task that takes me 10 minutes each quarter now. I am a 1 man band Ltd company. I'll wait and see how it pans out over the next 3 months. But you may not get "free" software to do this. We are buying in our solution from a third party provider.
Good business opportunity for someone to develop an Android/I-Phone app to do this. Can't imagine anything simpler to do on a phone, fill in a simple form and then click submit. Sell it for £5-10 on Android market place.

I find that strange.HMRC said:
The Making Tax Digital rules apply from your first VAT period starting on or after 1 April 2019. A ‘VAT period’ is the inclusive dates covered by your VAT Return.
So assuming your new period started the first of February your first VAT return that has to be done using MTD is 01/05/2019 to 31/07/2019 with a submission deadline of 07/08/2019 .PurpleMoonlight said:

Who is it?Because they are wrong.
Someone should tell HMRC that PurpleMoonlight from an internet message board says they are wrong.
For return periods starting on/after 1 April 2019, the vast majority of VAT registered businesses making taxable supplies over the threshold (£85,000) will have to keep digital records, and submit their returns using Making Tax Digital compatible software. For more information, including how to join the pilot select here.
