Some things here strike me as odd.

1) I've never, NEVER 'accidentally' found porn online. Not even once. The closet you might come would be the old warez boards of the 90's with pop ups. But then, you're already in the ahole of the internet there, you have to expect it.

2) I've never heard of many people looking at stuff that did nothing for them, be about as much point as fapping over a dictionary. If they're watching it, they almost certainly like it. All this extreme, niche stuff is just that, NICHE. Not many go for it. Furthermore this niche stuff is drowned by the volume of vanilla items, again unlikely to find it unless you go looking for it and if someone is looking for it, then there's more to it.

3) Why all the sexism? Why only upset about things girls do? What about all the images and movies of men being abused? Do you think this doesn't exist?

Almost foolproof way to block the evil porns: Kids need the internet for homework? Lynx. Of course, there's the erotic fiction and the ascii porn..........life always finds a way: accept it, understand it and attempt to deal with it.

To deal with the above - anyone goggling PORN as a kid may do if he heres someone mention it in the playground will find porn, easily.

They arent looking to get off, they are curious.

The vast majority of men on your bog standard pornhub type sites are not having a rough time of it.

If you're that worried, go the unix route wink

It still boggles my mind that people don't understand the internet.

Once you accept (and you might as well accept it, otherwise you're in for a rough ride) you'll NEVER stop kids getting at porn, you can start addressing the real issues around it.

ETA: Nor are the vast majority of women. Niche is niche.

No one is trying to stop determined and curious teenagers finding porn - the current issue is that thousands of young kids (5,6,7,8 years old) have access to ipads, etc, etc and therefore - easy access to extreem hardcore porn. It would be nice if there was a way of lowering that expousre.

The best way is parental common sense....but people cant have it both ways - you cant say "all parents are dumb" and then not feel some rules should be i place to protect the kids of those parents. Either you think parents suck or you dont.

If you want to protect the kids of dumb parents, interfere in the lives of dumb parents. Not everybody else's.

IMO 5-8 year old children shouldn't be online unsupervised. That is a parental issue.

Great - but it's happening. In a few years most homes will have an ipad or similar on the coffee table.

Easy enough to stop these devices going online.

Right now, you can set security on most devices, at a user level (securing them should be as easy as pressing Ctrl, Alt, Del smile) In the future, it will be even easier, with the widespread adoption and use of RFID type systems / biometrics for authentication.

It should always be the responsibility of parents, to ensure their children are exposed to the levels of danger / adult material, the parents deem safe . . . . . just as it's always been down to the parents to make sure that their children, don't play with knives and not demand that the government outlaw bladed utensils

And I have a sky box which can access all sorts of muck at any time in the living room today but I take reasonable steps to make sure the kids can't/don't get to it.

I singularly fail to see why a tablet/laptop should be any different. It is MY responsibility as a parent to do my best to keep inappropriate things from the kids, no-one elses. Even if for no other reason than I'll be the judge of inappropriate thank you very much.

Your sky box cant access the same stuff as an ipad with such ease...and if it could there would be uproar in all the papers, let alone the wail.

This.

No need to punish the majority to sort out the minority.

yep - and when they are as prevalent and simple to use as laptops this issue will get bigger and bigger.

Not if a parent takes responsibility.

There is probably a road outside your house, do you let your kids play on it?

Why? It's the same internet on a TV as a laptop.

Because a TV is more accessible to a young child than a laptop.
