Very sad, but I disagree strongly that the previous signage was inadequate... It says exactly what should not be done, and it was explicitly ignored.

You put your head out of a fast moving train window and it strikes something stationary and heavy.

Suprise suprise!

And the supposedly better, new version, is arguably worse- longer, making it less likely to be read at all, and implying that it is safe to lean out of a still moving train once it is in the station, whereas the old sign made the better point that you shouldn't lean out of a moving train regardless of where it is.

Getting rid of the opening windows seems the only measure likely to really improve matters. Individuals will always make stupid mistakes- usually we get away with them, but occasionally- consequences.

Common Sense is sadly lacking in the young nowadays. Also, sure I read that the section of track hadn't been trimmed back since 2009. One pic showed the actual tree that she hit, supposedly.

Very sad but a lesson to others i.e. Don't stick your head, or any part of you you want to keep, out of a moving vehicle. Ever!!

On Your Head Be It!! (yes, I know someone used that earlier, sorry)

Maybe it's not gloating so much as a complete lack of sympathy for the terminally stupid.
As I said, she was the worse for wear for drink, wanted to be sick, tried to do it out of the window rather than in the train. Some would call that stupid, others would think it considerate.

Either way, still no need for the unkind gloating on here.

I’ve travelled the UK extensively by train, and never before seen trees encroaching that far onto the track.

Lots of Larry Logics stating the bleeding obvious on here. No matter how wrong or silly what she did was, there was a massive dose of bad luck involved where seconds either way things would not have turned out so calamitous and we wouldn't be talking about this.

Transport for Wales (taken over from Arriva who's franchise expired) have just re-introduced some slam door carriages and you can see youngsters struggling to work out how to open the doors even though there are huge signs right next to the door and posters in every station telling them how to operate them.

They're also using a couple of Class 37 Locos while they are awaiting introduction of new Locos and rolling stock. Apparently rail enthusiasts are travelling from all over the country to see then old locos.

The very late trains from Victoria to East Croydon back in the 80s didn't stop at Selhurst, my station.

Thanks to the slam doors we would jump out, the train was usually going slow.

We have all done stupid things and I know I have stuck my head out of the window in the old days just for the sake of it, back in the day.

Poor girl.

It’s incredibly sad that a young girl has died in tragic circumstances, this is someone’s daughter FFS.

Pretty appalling that the assembled ranks of NP&E like to polish their superiority complex by posting about ‘natural selection’ and the like. Make you feel good about yourselves does it? Pricks.

I travel on this line fairly regularly. The bogs on these trains are often out of order or occupied by people fare-dodging. It was gone 10pm on a Saturday night, she’d been Christmas shopping with friends probably had a few drinks, felt the urgent need to be sick and, most likely in an effort to not vomit all over the vestibule area, stuck her head out of the window. At many hundreds of miles on that line she would have been perfectly OK, alas was incredibly unlucky to encounter a lineside tree.

Her parents have lost their daughter and some of you want to gloat about it? Shame on you.
Absolutely this! The poor girl was unlucky and it killed her. This is very sad and I bet most of us have done far more dangerous things and got away with it.

Horrible comments from horrible people are to be expected in Internet land

Wonder how many of the posters to this topic would be prepared to verbally repeat their comments to her parents, family and friends?

I’m not making excuses, I’m just saying that it’s an unfortunate consequence.

However, some people on this thread are equating having a few too many with this girl somehow ‘deserving her death through stupidity’. Nice.

Presumably that is why you should not lean out the window, just in case!

I'm on the sympathetic side on this one, the amount of moronic things I've done whilst drunk.....it's a miracle I'm still here frankly, and I'm sure lots of other PH'ers are similar. She was just very unlucky.

Personally I think signage is a waste of time, if you are drunk and have decided you want to put your head out of a window, any sign isn't going to stop you. They should just interlock the doors/windows so it's not possible to get your head out whilst the train is moving. It is common sense not to do this, but on public transport where you can expect a wide range of intelligence, I think you have a duty to prevent anyone being able to do this.

I’m not convinced locking people in a train is an entirely good idea. Might have unexpected consequences in a fire or accident.
