Getting rid of the opening windows seems the only measure likely to really improve matters. Individuals will always make stupid mistakes- usually we get away with them, but occasionally- consequences.

Common Sense is sadly lacking in the young nowadays. Also, sure I read that the section of track hadn't been trimmed back since 2009. One pic showed the actual tree that she hit, supposedly.but old slam door trains in 2019 wow I did not know there were any left
Very sad but a lesson to others i.e. Don't stick your head, or any part of you you want to keep, out of a moving vehicle. Ever!!

I’ve travelled the UK extensively by train, and never before seen trees encroaching that far onto the track.

Transport for Wales (taken over from Arriva who's franchise expired) have just re-introduced some slam door carriages and you can see youngsters struggling to work out how to open the doors even though there are huge signs right next to the door and posters in every station telling them how to operate them.but old slam door trains in 2019 wow I did not know there were any left
They're also using a couple of Class 37 Locos while they are awaiting introduction of new Locos and rolling stock. Apparently rail enthusiasts are travelling from all over the country to see then old locos.
The very late trains from Victoria to East Croydon back in the 80s didn't stop at Selhurst, my station.
Thanks to the slam doors we would jump out, the train was usually going slow.
We have all done stupid things and I know I have stuck my head out of the window in the old days just for the sake of it, back in the day.

I travel on this line fairly regularly. The bogs on these trains are often out of order or occupied by people fare-dodging. It was gone 10pm on a Saturday night, she’d been Christmas shopping with friends probably had a few drinks, felt the urgent need to be sick and, most likely in an effort to not vomit all over the vestibule area, stuck her head out of the window. At many hundreds of miles on that line she would have been perfectly OK, alas was incredibly unlucky to encounter a lineside tree.
Her parents have lost their daughter and some of you want to gloat about it? Shame on you.
Absolutely this! The poor girl was unlucky and it killed her. This is very sad and I bet most of us have done far more dangerous things and got away with it. I'm on the sympathetic side on this one, the amount of moronic things I've done whilst drunk.....it's a miracle I'm still here frankly, and I'm sure lots of other PH'ers are similar. She was just very unlucky.

They should just interlock the doors/windows so it's not possible to get your head out whilst the train is moving. It is common sense not to do this, but on public transport where you can expect a wide range of intelligence, I think you have a duty to prevent anyone being able to do this.

I’m not convinced locking people in a train is an entirely good idea.
