But 1 fat kid is too many.

Not to get too Jamie Oliver about it, but what will they be fed? Sometimes, believe it or not, nothing is better (for you) than something (unhealthy).
I saw something from a 15 year boy on the BBC (I think) yesterday who said that thanks to the school meal scheme he ate better food than he otherwise would.

Not "more" but better.

I think his words were that the stuff he'd otherwise eat would leave him hungry after an hour.

Massive oversimplification and, in fact, not correct. Childhood obesity is an increasingly difficult problem in the UK, according to the government and also the NHS.

You need to also focus on what they are fed.
You're conflating two separate issues.

Quite.

It's one I struggle with.

Goes back to my earlier point about repeatedly being told "we should look after our own" and apparently right now hungry British children aren't our own confused
Because they’re hypocrites. What they really mean is no one should be looked after. Unless of course a global pandemic comes along and they need to be furloughed. In that instance they’re happy to put their hand out and suck the socialist teat.
They never asked for all this, it’s caused massive uncertainty in the business community. Not only that, government spending is deferred taxation, these business owners will be over represented in the groups that suffer the most tax rises after this has finished

While I appreciate that the cost of providing them is peanuts compared to the furlough scheme. What's the special situation that demands them in this case?
British children going without food.
Wow you really like selectively quoting don't you?

My question is that if someone is on benefits then their income won't have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Their benefits will continue to be paid. Why is this summer any different to any other for them.
It's not, children go hungry every summer. It's getting more attention than ever because there are more children than ever in that situation this summer.

One could say that these kids, how many I don’t know, will be the people paying the taxes to cover this, alongside others of course.
Must be bloody awful being hungry, not starving, hungry.

So why food vouchers, rather than an increase in overall benefits?

I don't necessarily agree with providing FSMs during the holidays, but only because I would prefer that every parent has enough money to look after themselves and their dependents, be that via a salary or benefits, and that parents that do not look after their children are investigated by the relevant authorities.

If we could make the assumption that everyone has enough money to feed their kids, then any child going hungry is being abused.

The problem here is that this is a very simple solution to a very complex problem. I know the Daily Mail would have us believe that everyone on benefits is "feckless" and cost the country a fortune, but that really isn't the case. If "I, Daniel Blake" bears even a passing resemblance to real life for some people then we know that benefits administration is a massive issue that leaves people without money for weeks on end. And those people often have children. And this is just one of a myriad of issues that lead to some children living in poverty.

I would like to think this pandemic would lead us as a nation to question what type of country we want. To ensure those in need get the help they require. To ensure those that support this country when we are at our lowest are paid a proper wage. Unfortunately, I suspect this will all become a distant memory all too quickly.

I can quite honestly say, after listening to my sister who's a primary headmistress in Dorset, that I would pay more tax to make sure most kids get fed properly. It's not their fault some parents are pieces of st.

One of those things that if the government announced an extra penny on income tax for tomorrow I'd be like yup, fair enough.

Nicola Sturgeon just announced Scotland to extend the Scottish version of this.

Really can't see Boris standing in the way of this !

You'll be labelled a communist for having thoughts like that in these parts.
Maybe. I'm far from it though. I favour the approach of the Conservative party over the policies and beliefs of the Labour party, in general, but appreciate that they sometimes need reining in. This is one example of that.
I think (hope) there are enough Conservatives of that persuasion to influence the leadership to do the right thing in this instance.

Makes you wonder who exactly they mean when they say "look after our own".

Let poor people starve - the mantra of a certain section of society.

Hard to fathom really.

Surely it says something about his leadership when he’s having to make U-turns on so many decisions...

Anyone think we may see a reverse ferret from the Government on this one?
Remarkable hehe

Right result but it does make you wonder why they did it the hard way.
