I’d love to see the maths, but I’m reasonable sure a coal fired power station puts out more radioactive material just running as it should than a modern nuclear power station blowing up.
Do you mean radioactive? At the decommissioning of Harwell nuclear power station near me the Nuclear Constabulary carried machine guns. The authorities really didn't want anyone taking anything sparky. I doubt coal fired power stations pose such a risk.
You have ironically proved my point that people are terrified of nuclear power plants.

https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/do-coal-fired...

Coal fired stations chuck their ash out into the atmosphere all the time, not just when being blown up. So they are continually pumping out small amounts of radioactive materials (that exist, naturally, in many things - as someone else mentioned bananas).

The coppers are there because they don't want someone to steal the uranium and then take it away to enrich it. The Russians already have nuclear bombs, they don't need to steal any more from a nuclear power station with the need to then spend ages enriching it to the point where they can make a bomb.
The regulations and procedures surrounding nuclear material are crazy!
In a job I had years ago, I had to travel to Sellafield to remove a couple of small, depleted, isotopes from some equipment. I had to place them into protective containers and these were then shipped to the manufacturer so they could be disposed of officially.
For disposal of nuclear material there are very few specialised sites in Europe.
These ones were sent to...

Wait for it....

Sellafield!

Bloody bureaucracy!

China has been playing the long game for years geo-politically, while we've been bickering.

It will come back to bite us in the arse, maybe Russia will become their lapdog?

The Last Chinese Wall.
A Russian bear with a saber stands in front of Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, the United States, Turkey and Spain, all holding rifles with bayonets, behind them sits a laughing China (April 24, 1901)

I wonder if China see an opportunity to use this for getting up nearer the Arctic Circle ( I don't know where the Russian O&G sites are ). For instance, they've tried and failed to buy a harbour in one of Scandinavian nations. China want to be recognised as an Arctic Nation.
They probably see opportunities for all sorts.

People have queued up to dump valuable assets in exchange for good PR and there's others out there all too happy to grab the bargains. Short term vs long term view.

It provokes discussion and comments and therefore a sort of pressure.

Never gonna happen and he must know that, but there might be further concessions and aid elsewhere.

China may underestimate Western venom if Russia becomes their clear bum chum. It's not as if we weren't looking a for reason to back away from China anyway.

The Chinese must favour a lazy, divided and dependent West. That might be forever toast now.

Have they taken such a pasting that they are using civilian vehicles & trucks now ?

The Scooby Doo van is a UAZ 452. The red truck is a Kamaz. and the thing in front of the Niva is a GAZ 2975.

Maybe. But let's say in 5 years if Russia is a forgotten problem and the Chinese are sat on an even bigger pile of energy and commodity resources who's got the advantage and who's going to remember why?

Slightly deviating but must be tricky from a legal perspective to do this.

I expect the franchisees will be licenced by the country franchise licence holder who in turn is licensed by McD head office. What provision in their contracts will just allow them to pull out because of the bad PR of continuing to operate in a territory just because of their government's actions?

Obviously this point is a total side issue but I expect these big corps must be weighing up the bad press against the numerous legal cases that could be heading their way.

Wouldn't surprise me if McDonalds have some sort of a catch all clause to bail themselves out.
