That is true enough. Thatcher was often cautious and calculating and it was only toward the end that she became so rigid and unwilling to change, as exemplified by the Poll tax.

When current Tories hark back to her it is more an image of her than the gritty reality and compromises of 11 years in power. Still far better than any current Tory politician of course.
Good post and agreed!!

I think we've reached peak levels of obtuseness on this thread with your post, well done.
If over 9 years on PH has taught me one thing it’s that someone, somewhere, will be along soon to raise that bar to new levels.

The difference being you didn’t make the rules, Bozza and his tory chums did.
Yip, seems some would rather use Boris and the rest’s rule breaking to validate their own rather and as a result are looking desperate trying to defend a government ignoring it’s own imposed rules. But then that’s what Boris does, lets others take the fall and walks away as if nothing happened, it’s a thankless task defending him and you’ll eventually look a fool.
I’m not defending him. I just couldn’t care less.

Boris is a twunt. I just think if a PM steps down for having a few drinks at a relatively low risk event the UK is a laughing stock.

He should go along with every MP who voted for lockdowns in the first place. That was the real crime.

But it’s depressing to see so many posters explaining how valiant they were obeying all the rules. I can picture them at primary school bursting to tell the teacher who put the tack on their chair.
I wasn't valiant in not visiting my father in hospital before he died last year - I simply wasn't allowed in.
And that was fking outrageous. Shame on the hospital, shame on the doctors and nurses who wouldn’t let you break a rule that was yours to decide.

I would have beaten the doors down. Those rules were a crime.

But they have nothing to do with having a few drinks in a low risk setting.
The doctors and nurses there didn't just make up their own rules.

You cant just force your own way into a hospital - that's just silly.
I really believe him, Randy. I mean really, really believe. He sounds like one of those brave people who fights for justice.

Let's face it, he posted that, and many might think it is empty boasting as he probably hasn't done it. There's also the point that he might come over as self-centred, not concerned about the needs of others, putting his own little needs above everyone else's.

I wouldn't like others thinking that I'm a selffish git, and many might think that, going by his post, and the others, particularly where he compares all doctors to Shipham (nice touch, by the way. Who could disagree? I mean apart from those of us who've seen what those in the ICUs all over the country have done, but they aren't fighters for the needs of themselves, so can be discounted.)

Not many posters would want to run the risk of been thought of as a poser, using empty diatribes to build up their own image without actually having to do something.

I really, really believe him. Or at least, I really, really believe he thinks he's the type of person who would not only post things on forums but actually dream about doing such things.

Totally agree. The best thing for Labour is for Boris to stay in place. Even Starmer would beat him.
Yep , Boris has reached the point of no return , lost the both party’s support and the electorate ,
I think we are going to have a labour government
Unless they dump him ,and quickly.
The cost of living thing caused by his net zero economic growth policies will be his legacy
Like the Heath government it was energy that finished them . He has paid a high price to keep princess nut nut happy whistle

You actually think all of this is driven by Carrie? Quite apart from your obvious misogyny, your apparent ignorance of Boris and his lifelong relationship with the truth is laughable. As for paying a high price, I think it’s us taxpayers who will be picking that tab up.

IIRC Sue Gray is a very senior Civil Servant in the Cabinet Office.

The Cabinet Office is based next to Downing Street and I wonder if there is an adjoining door?

Whilst it is fiction (although sometimes very close to the truth) Yes Minister has one being in place!

Was she at any of the parties one wonders?

How on earth do we go forward and function as a country if we kick out a sitting prime minister for having some socially distanced cheese and wine?

As in how do we find anyone virtuous enough to do the job without some minor event occurring in 3 months time and we need to start looking for a new one.

Putin must be currently dismantling entire departments in the FSB - "No need for you anymore guys, we have discovered that if you just leave them to it they will destabilise themselves"

Wow

https://news.sky.com/story/number-10-doesnt-deny-s...

"Downing Street parties: Number 10 doesn't deny staff held 'wine-time Fridays' throughout COVID restrictions

In fresh allegations in the "partygate" scandal engulfing the prime minister, it is alleged that a weekly "wine-time Fridays" event was scheduled into the electronic calendars of around 50 staff in Number 10 between 4pm and 7pm throughout the COVID pandemic."

Not sure he can shrug off any outdoor party now.

Again that is not the point is it? It is the fact that other people couldn’t do such things, they made the rules and then were, let’s say, economical with the truth when they got found out.

FGS Johnson refused to admit he was at one of them until he had no choice.

And we do not kick him out, the Tory MPs will make the decision.

And again what would be your definition of a non tribal event?

ETA - do you work in Downing Street as yiu seem very keen to keep on defending Johnson despite the evidence.

That will happen again - as someone admitted during Brexit, they knew that Johnson was lying to them but they were Ok with that because they got what they wanted!

I do despair at times
