It’s a sorry state of affairs when the descriptions of the leaders of our two largest political parties is who has crapped in his own cage the most.

Johnson doesn’t have the moral compass of Starmer that is clear. But I don’t want either to run our country.
It is looking seriously like neither of them has an especially well-tuned sense of communication and das politik ("moral compass" is a term best avoided lest you "do a Starmer").

I agree it is a sorry state of affairs. They are like two chimps throwing st at each other. I think our adversarial Parliament set up actually encourages this, and we're at a real nadir. The whole system needs a proper shake out.

Lockdown was an absolute fiasco in so many ways, especially as so many key figures in the government, government advisors etc just decided to ignore it altogether (btw I'm not a covid denier or anything like that). It does look very much like Labour do have a case to answer, much as the Tories still do. This has I think massively reduced public trust in their elected representatives. I doubt anyone will heed calls for any future restrictions should anyone deem them necessary, beyond say measures taken on individual initiative.

I agree about the adversarial nature of modern politics, some of the things being said are completely beyond the pale, but then some of the behaviour is as well, I still think BJs behaviour falls well short of any politican let alone a prime minister, but SKS is just lacking something as well, neither are a patch on the great politicians we had in the past.

Exactly. Whatever one thinks about gatherings/cake/beer, it's clear that both men have displayed poor judgement at the very least.

What makes it worse, however, is the cringeworthy behaviour of each side's lackeys. I heard Bridget Philipson this morning trotting out the whole "very different situations, Keir is a saint and Boris is a liar" nonsense. But then, that's no worse than Nadine Dorries and her sycophantic drivel.

You use the word 'adversarial', and I think you're right. It's like each side (and I include the SNP in this) will do anything, condone anything and support anything as long as it means their team 'wins'. A real nadir? Damn right.

So it is all just a game
It always has been, especially under a tired, tribal FPTP system that confines our real life choices and reduces meaningful debate and policy development to nothing more than playing to the baying mob.

Try getting an alternative to FPTP past the electorate, the only way it'll happen is by subterfuge which sidesteps democracy in terms of the will of the people.

It's certainly not tired; the alternatives are, in contrast, comatose.

We have not had a 50%+ of the actual Vote government since the 1950s.

Which is pretty shocking

We should have gone to a form of PR decades ago.

But FPTP suited the Tory and Labour Govts of the day.

It was actually 1935 but the tories did get close in the 1950's.

Latest YouGov. poll

El Stovey is usually right on time with these, I guess he must be busy. There is every chance my prediction will come true next week as this only covered the first day of kormagate hehe

Posted on the starmer thread, your predictions can’t come true because you already got proven wrong weeks ago.

Why is that funny?! 0/10

How can that particular prediction about next weekbe proved wrong weeks ago? Duh.

Looks like the joy of Conservative recovery / Labour demise at work.

Really don't get why people still think that this hopelessly outdated party system is in any way relevant or that Conservative, Labour or Liberal actually represent them in any meaningful fashion. Voting nowadays is brainless historical tribalism, nothing more.
Interesting to note in last week's council elections the growth of '(Insert Your Town Name Here) First' candidates, focusing purely on local issues.

Yup, it seems that tribalism overrides everything. With our political system pretty much forcing and all or nothing outcome, people want their chosen "team" to win at all costs. What we are left with is this dated cringefest of tosspots.

The episode of "Yes Prime Minister" on TV last night pretty much summed that up. Sadly they didnt use the phrase that I am going to pinch " dated cringefest of tosspots."

His prediction that the conservatives would be ahead was supposed to happen weeks ago and didn’t happen.

That’s why it was proven wrong weeks ago, as it didn’t happen when he predicted it would.

He’s now saying yeah but it still might happen next week.

You’d know that if you looked before you leap, Duh.
