Another plane down - Algerian Airlines
Discussion
By the look of things. Algerian airlines Ougadougou departure lost contact 50 minutes after take off. According to this paper, it's a leased DC9. Not the best couple of weeks in civil aviation.

The picture shows a Boeing 727, not a DC-9.http://www.lexpress.fr/actualite/monde/afrique/air...
Air accidents occur quite frequently. Most don't get reported on unless they have some connection with the UK - or Europe/the US.
However, when we have a serious and dramatic incident like MH017, then EVERY accident will make front page news - for a few weeks.
Exactly the same phenomenon happened just after the Lockerbie crash.

The caption below the picture says: Some Algerian air aircraft. The article says leased DC9.Edit: They've updated the article:

Sounds a bit excessive - unless you include minor incidents as well - of which there are many.
There are also a lot more commercial aircraft in the skies today compared to 20 or 30 years ago so with more aeroplanes flying, even if accident RATES go down, the number of actual accidents will still rise.

Light aircraft yes Eric, but I think a passenger jet going down is headline news at any time such is its rarity.
Not as rare as you think. If a 15 passenger turboprop goes down in the Amazon jungle, it normally would not get much coverage in this part of the world - unless there are Brits involved.
But if a more serious accident has already occurred, then it WILL get reported.
I watch National Geographic's "Air Crash Investigation" and some of the accidents they cover are ones I would not have been aware of - especially accidents since the start of the 1990s - especially if they occurred in Asia, South America or Africa.
And? That affects planes falling out of the sky how? Or indeed the probability of a crash how?
Ppl only care about planes crashing because of a fear it might be them on that type of plane or that airline or from that airport one day. They don't care so much about the *actual* ppl who died in the actual crash under discussion.
The point remains that planes crash far more often than you think and rarely reported in your nice little middle class news to cause much concern in your nice little middle class life. Protestations to the contrary are quite Franky just...blah blah blah. Esp when its coming from a position of ignorance not k owing the above and from someone who flies on a statistically irrelevant basis. Let me guess you do less than 10 flights a yr?
So yes, its just another plane crash and bad luck chaps you were on it. I do 60 flights/yr, I might be on the next one. C'est la vie.
