Has surprised me that this thread hasn't gone this way yet, so I'll start.

Bus drivers these days are fekin' lethal. Many the times I have seen some poor old dear fall over 'cos Lewis Hamilton at the wheel charges off from the bus stop far too quickly.

Remember when Blue Peter used to go to the London Bus Driver's School where they did skid pan work and obstacles as well as testing how far a bus could lean before it fell over.

Do they train the drivers like that now? I doubt it.

Proper bus drivers biggrin

I'm told that London bus drivers havent done skidpan training for at least 25 years.

which, to me is fair enough: have they ever used it? Has a london bus ever got the back end out? Long enough, and with enough room available to them so they cn correct it? I bet if the answer to the first one is "yes, every so often" then the second answer will be "but it hit the kerb 0.5s afterwards"

^^ Quite. I can't imagine a bus ever needing opposite lock, all though skid pan training is as much about controlling on slippery surfaces - braking a bus with air brakes in snow must be pretty difficult, for example.

I imagine the response would be that, due to traffic's complete unwillingness to allow buses out, in heavy London traffic they simply need to push on, otherwise they'll never get out and run late.

I'm not justifying it, but I would think it's a tough balance of smooth driving versus making gaps and keeping time.
